William ROBINSON/Sarah BENNET, North Nibley (reply)

There is a William ROBINSON Widr 54 - Ag. Lab - born Gloucestershire Forest of Dean on the 1861 Census for Wednesbury, Staffordshire. Again on the 1871 Census, Staffordshire, St Bartholmew - William ROBINSON - age 62 - Labourer, born Gloucestershire - could this possibly be him - as Sarah states she is married on the census returns.

William ROBINSON/Sarah BENNET, North Nibley (reply)

Hi -

Just a quick note to express my interest in this thread: I'm descended from the "other" North Nibley Robinson marriage mentioned, William Robinson & Sarah Bennet (1834). Interestingly, Sarah and a daughter Maria (born Ross on Wye, 1835)were living in Little Dean in 1841. I don't know what became of William after Maria's birth, but he was the son of James Robinson and Ann Richards and was born 1811 in North Nibley.

It's been interesting to see the possible connection between the 1803 Matthew Robinson and his older namesake (who, it would seem, married first Esther Sparks and later Elizabeth Clutterbuck). I'd only known of a connection of the older M.R. to my tree so far.

Best,
Rebecca

Matthew Robinson born "North Nibley abt 1803" (reply)

Hallo Jeff,
I am completely new to this site. it is amazing, isn't it? I am very grateful for your kind help and support. I have just sent for the birth certificate of Elizabeth (nee Clutterbuck) and Matthew Robinson's son TOM, who was born in West Dean, Coleford, on 24th December 1848. It has now returned to me. The birth was actually registered in the Monmouth district on 14th January 1849. Their on-line census records mention a "Sam" who was born to them around that time. I think that must be a mis-transcription from the very original census returns! According to this birth certificate - father, Mattthew, was illiterate! (He signed his name with an "X".) Presumably Elizabeth was illiterate also - so the third party filling in their original census returns on their behalf may have misheard them, and thought they said their young son was "Sam" instead of "Tom". My husband has descended from Tom Robinson!

Thanks again for your help.

Matthew Robinson born "North Nibley abt 1803" (reply)

Hi and welcome to this great website and forum.
I guess from your post you've used this websites PRs to help your researches, and you know Matthew's burial which I've posted below, for completeness. I see on LDS he's clear in the Census's which I suspect you know too, so wont' repeat them all. However I think you dont have a Baptism for him; I was wondering if you have any clues as to Matthews parents names ?

From LDS this is a POSSIBILITY, do the parents name tie in, perhaps they appear in the later Census, hopefully nearby to Matthew ???. Turkdean isn't too far from Nibley, altho of course Matthew is not a rare name and it seems to have been used quite a lot thro the Robinson line, so...???

Just a thought..hope it helps.

HOWEVER, this is all what I'm sure you already know, with no hint (yet) of Matthew's Baptism, but thought worth looking up just in case.

Wills
Have you checked the Wills section of this FoD site ?. There are several Robinsons listed from 1859 onwards including William presumably as per the 1841 Viney Hill Census shown earlier, worth a look perhaps ?
http://www.forest-of-dean.net/?Wills_Index

Also the Glos Archives website lists Wills in North Nibley, so perhaps Matthews parents, from 1799 onwards.
eg Matthew Robinson, Yeoman North Nibley, March 1846

Robinsons in Little Dean (reply)

Hi Rhonda, I have only just seen your message! (7 years on!) I am researching ROBINSONS in Ruardean, Parkend, Cinderford, North Nibley, East Dean, Westbury on Severn, and Awre - and possibly Littledean. My Robinsons are so far headed by a Matthew ROBINSON, (Labourer), born in North nibley abt 1800 - 1805, married to Elizabeth, born in 1814 in Stinchcombe, Gloucestershire. Most of his male descendents were coal miners.

Hello,
I wonder if anyone else is researching the family of Philip Robinson son of John and Jane, born about 1744 in Little Dean.
Philip married Ann, they had twelve children.

Edward Robinson born 1791 was my ancestor.
Edward and one brother operated a paper mill in Overbury,Worcestershire.

Would love to hear from anyone searching this family,
