George Martin, Blaisdon (reply)

Hi, I have now found George Martin in the 1901 census, boarders at the address of Harriet Harvey living in Bristol, which is interesting to me as I have a old Birthday book which has Harriet Harvey, Annie Harvey and Mary Ann Harvey birthdays in.They were names that I have not found in my family tree,so I will have to look if there is a family connection with the Harvey's. Thanks

Hi, Thanks for your reply, that makes sense they were boarders and not sons, I have looked at that census a few times trying to figure out if they were the George and Herbert Martin I have in my family tree, another mystery solved.

Hi Ann

This information probably isn't much help to you but Thomas Toomey is part of my family tree. He and his wife worked around Westbury on Severn as agricultural labourers for a good part of their lives and were quite poor. On at least one occasion they had a lodger paying rent to them, also caring for a farmers aged servant and doing washing to supplement their meagre income. Therefore I assume the Martins you referred to would have been boarders and not sons.
If you are interested Thomas Toomey was involved in a court case called "The Toomey Case" where he was persecuted for being an early member of an Agricultural Union. The case received extensive coverage in the Western Mail Newspaper during September 1874. One of the reports gives a good description of the families income, or lack thereof, which would have probably been typical for that occupation at the time.

Thankyou for your reply, that is possible they were living in Bristol, I have got that info saved in my shoebox on ancestry but was not sure as Emma Jane was born in Bath and not Blaisdon, I know there were relations in Bristol, but I cant understand why they were boarders, perhaps they were staying with relatives at the time of the census.

George Martin, Blaisdon

I am trying to find out where George and Emma Jane Martin were living in 1901, I have not been able to find them living in Blaisdon in the 1901 census, I have found all their children living at various locations, but not sure about Herbert and George Martin being shown as sons of Thomas and Harriet Toomey living in Westbury on Severn in 1901 census, if anyone has any information it would be great to clear up this matter.
