Dymock 100 Years Remembered, V.A.D.s (reply)

Thank you Jeff and gwrmad for the fantastic information. Much appreciated. Callow Farm no longer grows hops. It is now an arable farm with cattle and sheep as paying guests during the summer.

Dymock 100 Years Remembered, V.A.D.s (reply)

This excellent website gives more info and history about the V.A.D. and other early nursing organisations. Their volunteer members became known as "VADs".
http://www.scarletfinders.co.uk/181.html

With direct reference to the VADs of the First World War, also see
http://www.redcross.org.uk/About-us/Who-we-are/History-and-origin/First-World-War/Volun...

This webpage about life in Dymock during WW1 mentions the Red Cross Society, and a Mr. A. CHEW of Callow Farm, Dymock.
Good luck Nimrod with this worthwhile event, I wish I was able to attend, I'm sure it will be very interesting. I guess one of your posters looks like this,

Dymock 100 Years Remembered

Dymock 100 Years Remembered

A display will be held 2 July at 2pm in Dymock Village Hall.

I have photocopies of WW1 posters ready to go but have a query with one.

It shows three young women in long white aprons and the message is: -

V.A.D. Nursing members, Cooks, Maids, Clerks, House maids, Ward-maids, Laundresses, Motor-Drivers, ETC. ARE URGENTLY NEEDED

What does V.A.D. stand for?
