George BEARD (Coronor Stops Funeral) (reply)

The Gloucester Citizen reported that George James Henry Beard was buried at Newland Church on Tuesday, February 5 1929.
There are several reports ref. his death and the intervention of the Coroner (the latter being as a result of the certifying Doctor mentioning the war wound of 1916 on the death certificate). A subsequent post mortem confirmed that death was due to natural causes.
Too much to transcribe.

Perhaps a reprieve for Lt. Beard. Newspaper just got the Regiment wrong. SWB and Mon. Regt. undoubtedly recruited from same general area which encroached into FoD. A brother of my grandfather (Soudley, East Dean)was a volunteer in the Royal Monmouthshie Royal Engineers Militia for several years in the 1890's. (3,000 officers and OR's, how about that).

george nurse beard (reply)

It's been said before - don't rely solely on newspaper reports.
I think in this case the rank of George Beard was incorrectly stated, since there is no officer service file after 1913 for a George Nurse Beard or plain George Beard at the National Archives, or any Beard, South Wales Borderers; there are no notifications of military appointments found in the London Gazette for George Nurse Beard or G. N. Beard ("gazetting" as a 2nd Lieutenant was usually announced with the officer's full name, and subsequent promotions, appointments, relinquishing commission, etc. with initials and surname); there is no listing of G.N. or G. Beard in Army Lists for March 1916, October 1917, and August 1918 (listing of officers and their various Regiments or Corps).
There is no record of WW1 campaign medals being issued to George Nurse Beard (although this is not conclusive proof since an officer was required to claim the medals).
The only record of WW1 campaign medals to a George Beard of The South Wales Borderers is to Corporal George Beard 35365 2nd Battalion.
There is no surviving service record for him.
It needs further research from some other source or sources - I would be delighted to be proved wrong.

Quite near the top is image of tinplate works, early 19th Century perhaps. Scroll down further and find Redbrook House circa 1900/10 May well be Beard family standing out front.
