BARNET(T) - Dixton and Staunton (reply)

Buried in the BNA Cheltenham Chronicle Thursday 15 October 1829,

On Thursday evening last, a young man of the name of Richard BYBEE, in passing by Wittenton’s Brook, near Staunton, was tempted to reach over a hedge and take several apples from a tree belonging to Wm. BARNETT (father of the unfortunate Edward BARNETT , who was executed at Monmouth for the murder of Esther STEPHENS). Without speaking a word, BARNETT shot at the young man and wounded him in the thighs: the poor fellow with great difficulty reached home, which was about a mile off, where he now lies in a very dangerous state. On the following morning BARNETT was taken before P.J.DUCARELL Esq. but was remanded till the next day, when at a meeting held at the Angel Inn, Coleford, he was committed to gaol: he has since been liberated on bail.

A report in the London Standard Tuesday 07 October 1828 reveals that Edward’s mother (fast declining in years) was at the inquest and that Edward was her youngest son.

BARNET(T) - Dixton and Staunton (reply)

If you use the Advance Search for Births/Marriages/Deaths and just put in each time - Surname: BAR and residence KY - don't add where they were married, as sometimes they married elsewhere : family grouping can be worked out.

This is just a few of the baptisms/marriages etc

e.g.

Dixton

25 October 1818 - baptism of Henry BARNET - parents: William (labourer) and Mary - residence: KYMINN

4 October 1829 - baptism of Ann BARNET - parents: William (labourer) and Margaret - residence KYMIN

5 May 1833 - baptism of Thomas BARNETT - parents: William (labourer) and Margaret - residence KYMIN

7 August 1842 - baptism of Marianne BARNETT - parents : Henry (labourer) and Jane - residence: KYMIN

etc etc

Dixton

27 October 1840 - Edwin BARNETT - reisdence: KYMIN - father: William (labourer) - married Charlotte HALL - witnesses: Henry BARNETT and Esther HALL

6 February 1842 - Henry BARNETT - residence: KYMIN - father : William (labourer) - married Jane LEWIS - witness: Edwin BARNETT

etc etc.

Dixton

12 March 1846 - William BARNETT - aged 68 - residence: Kymin in the Parish of Dixton (=c1778)
28 March 1860 - Margaret BARNETT - aged 73 - residence: Kymin in the Parish of Dixton

etc etc

married at Dixton

William BARNETT - (Widower) married Margaret OWENS of Monmouth - 2 September 1828 - so the

the death of a Mary BARNETT : residence Kymin -aged 33 in 1 June 1828 - could be William's wife.

married at Dixton - 25 September 1815

William BARNETT of this Parish and Mary KNIGHT : witnesses: Edward BARNET and Hannah BARNET

married at Dixton - 10 September 1815 -

Edward BARNETT of this Parish and Hannah THOMAS; witnesses: William BARNETT and Henry KNIGHT

---

Edward & Hannah BARNET - according to the records - had children baptised both at Staunton and Dixton

John BARNET - 1820 at Staunton
Edward BARNET - 1822 - at Staunton
Ann BARNETT - 1822 at Dixton
Henry BARNETT - 1828 at Staunton

--

1841 Census, Newton Dixton

ANCESTRY: BORNATT

Edwd - 50 - woodman (like William) - not born in County
Hannah - 45
John - 20
Edward - 15
Henry - 13

--

So we possibly have a family name of Edward BARNET

----

1841 census Newton Dixton

Hymin Hill

BARNETT

William - 55 - Woodman - not born in County
Margaret - 50 - not born in County
Henry - 20 - all born in County
James - 14
Ann - 11
Thomas - 9

Edward Barnett hanged Monmouth 1829 (reply)

As Esther STEVENS was buried 1 October 1828 - murdered (on the transcripts) by W DONNELL?

and Mary BARNETT (residence KYMIN) was buried 1 June 1828 - this would appear to be the wife of Edward.

If you use the Advance Search i.e. burials etc - there is a small group of BARNETT's residence: Kymin. Use the Soundex as the surname is spelt or transcribed in other ways.

Edward Barnett hanged Monmouth 1829

I am looking to see if I can find the parents of Edward Barnett, born 1806, hanged for the murder of Esther Stevens at Monmouth in 1829. I believe that he was married to Mary Gwilliam due to the newspaper reports saying that she had died a few months before the murder. He is buried in Staunton. My family, Barnett, lived in Staunton at this time but I can not find the link if there is one. Can anyone help?
