Hello Sam,

Can you be more specific, ie. general forestry of individual woodmen. I have two relatives who were woodwards but have very little info on them. I also have a 1956 book 'Dean Forest and the Wye Valley' which has a lot of general info about the various plantations including two nice maps.

Forest Keepers (reply)

Sam
I have a little info passed on from a contact
William Briscoe - born Kilkenny c1795, died Littledean, Glos., 03.03.1860. Forest keeper in H.M.Royal Forest of Dean. Lived in Head Keepers Lodge - Latimer Lodge on Littledean Hill. He married Johanna Aylward - born Newmarket, Ireland c 1803, died Cinderford 14.10.1878. Johanna buried at St.Johns churchyard, Cinderford.
Family story - William and Johanna arrived from Ireland in 1837 with `horses and dogs` and 6 children.
#Their eldest known child is the William you mention b.c.1825 in Kilkenny.
He was also a forest keeper and lived and died (1897) at Sallow Vallets Lodge,F.of Dean.
He was a census enumerator in 1851.
He married on 04.11.1846, Sophia Mountjoy b.Littledean 1823, d.30.06.1861
They had 7 children :
Sallow Vallets lodge is still standing and you can still see the lodge no
above the window
Hope this will be of help
Peter
