George STERRY (& Wm LEA) of Longhope, Welsh papers, c1910 (reply)

While researching another Longhope subject I stumbled across this news item which I thought might interest the Sterry researchers. I don't know which George this refers to.

LONGHOPE CASE FAILS
George Sterry, of the Slade, Longhope, labourer, was charged by Police-constable Hadbourne at Littledean yesterday with stealing two shaft tugs, britching, and strap, the property of William Benjamin Lea, of Hopebrook Farm, Longhope. Mr. G. Trevor Wellington, Gloucester, defended.
Mr. Lea stated that defendant had often worked for him. He left on the 5th of last February. Later witness missed the property, and reported the matter to the police.
Police-constable Radbourne deposed that on talking the matter over with defendant he consented to witness examining the harness in his (defendant's) stable. Witness there and then found the two shaft tugs (produced) and took possession of them, because they corresponded with the description Mr. Lea had given him. After Mr. Lea had identified the property as his, he again saw defendant, who declared it was not Mr. Lea's property, as he bought it off Mr. Bradley.
Mr. W. A. Bradley, grocer, Littledean, said he had had dealings years ago in old harness with the defendant's son.
Cross-examined: Witness would not swear that he did not sell these very articles to defendant's son.
The case was hereupon dismissed, Mr. Wellington submitting there was no evidence upon which the magistrates could convict.
Cardiff Evening Express, 11th June 1910

http://newspapers.library.wales/view/4219275/4219279/144/longhope%20sterry

(W.A.Bradley was in fact a shopkeeper of Little London, near Longhope, and not "Littledean", an understandable reporting error).

Not sure if this is of interest to anyone in the Sterry search. A Distant relation of my husband Mary Gatfield 1822-1897 married THOMAS STERRY b 1822 Aston Ingham, d 1901 Westbury on Severn. I have researched this part of the Sterry family so if anyone wants information on them I can probably inbox it to them.

STERRYs of Longhope & area, Westbury on Severn. (reply)

Yes Peter, in my FH researches I've only ever seen Jones spelt thus, altho in this modern multicultural age Johns is becoming popular and even Johannes ! Finding my all-to-commonplace family isn't difficult, it's sorting out WHICH of the many William Jones is mine that's the problem... but yes easier than yours for sure.

I have seen Sterrey as well as Sterry, as I posted earlier. I still find it fascinating that names initially seem unusual are often not rare at all, depending where you're looking of course. From a Welsh Newspapers viewpoint, their website gives hits for over 1200 "Sterry", but just 5 for "Sterrey", altho this may just reflect journalist's spellings.
Several of the above hits relate to a Sterry Road, Gowerton near Swansea.

I only recall ever meeting ONE Sterry, a lad from Westbury who I was at school with in the 70s. I presume he was related to the blue-liveried "Sterry Coal Merchants" lorry often parked alongside the main A40 in Westbury in the 80s and 90s ?.

Re the Westbury Sterrys, here's a brief mention, altho I've included the whole article in case other names are of interest to the forum;

Cardiff Times of 20th November 1875,

"LITTLEDEAN.

VIOLENT ASSAULTS.— At the Petty-sessions, on Monday (before Captain Goold, Mr R. J. Kerr, and the Rev. C. E. Dighton), John Davis, Richard Davis, junr., and Richard Davis, senr., were brought up, the former charged with assaulting Edward Clarke, a night watchman at the Forest Vale Iron Works, and Police-constable Roseblade; and the two others with rescuing John Davis from the custody of Roseblade. The evidence showed that at 11 o'clock on the night of the 8th inst., John Davis was found by the watchman drunk upon the works talking to the men. He advised Davis to go home, when Davis made a most savage assault upon him, knocking him down several times, and following this up by showers of stones. The policeman, on being fetched, was also assaulted but on the arrival of Sergt. Critchley defendant was taken into custody. Prior to his arrival, however, the two other defendants came out of the house and assaulted the constable, and ultimately rescued John Davis. Both policemen were obliged to use violence, so savage were the attacks. Mr Cooke, of Gloucester, appeared for the complainants, Mr Dighton for the defendants. John Davis was sent to gaol for 3 months; Richard Davis, junr., was fined £1 and costs, or one month's imprisonment; Richard Davies, senr., 10s and costs, or 10 days' imprisonment.

LARCENY BY GIPSIES.— Neptune James Jones and Henry Loveridge, two young gipsies, were brought up charged with stealing a hand-truck, value 7s, the property of William Sterry, of Westbury-on-Severn. The defendants stated that they took the truck for the purpose of conveying some skewers to Cheltenham, and intended to bring it back. They were committed for one month's imprisonment each."

Hopefully this is of interest to you, Peter; I see several William Sterry's in W-o-S albeit a little before this ?, but I guess he links into this recent thread ?

Researching STERRYs of Longhope and neighbouring area. (reply)

At least Jones is nearly always spelt Jones.

By contrast, yet another Sterry variant in and around the Forest is Sterrey, which is the spelling my great-grandfather Henry at Lydney adopted, don't ask me why. His great-grandfather in turn was Richard Sterry who was married at Minsterworth in 1794 and that's where the register trail runs dry.

But a DNA sample provided by Alan Sterrey, also of Lydney, Henry's nephew, not many years before his death in 2014, proves our line was linked to the Longhope Sterrys.

The other recent twist is that today's priest-in-charge at Longhope and Huntley came from up north to take up the job and apparently had no idea where his roots were until he got there. His name? The Reverend Chris Sterry!

Not far north of Longhope, and south of May Hill, running off the A40, you'll find Sterrys Lane. We get everywhere, currently found across the Forest as far as Woolaston as well as Lydney. But amazingly in all this, considering it isn't far from Longhope to Ruardean, no documentary, DNA or other link has yet been found between those earliest Ruardean Sterrys/Stirryes (or however you care to spell it) and those of Longhope and Minsterworth. Whoever finds that link will be celebrated world wide as the ultimate layer of a golden egg.

Hiram aka Samuel Sterry b 1857, Longhope (reply)

"I have no idea why he suddenly decided to call himself Samuel rather than Hiram - especially as he had a brother called Samuel."

Hi Robert, thanks for clarifying things re the Census, even tho' and as usual it's ruined yet another of my conspiracy theories, I really should get my over-active imagination seen to !.

Re Samuel changing his name, maybe this is something to do with the water in Hope Brook ? ;-)
Whereas the Longhope Sterrys seemed to favour Samuel as their traditional "family" name, my Longhope Wrights favoured Leonard. This MAY be the reason that my Great Uncle "suddenly" called himself Harry LEONARD Wright at the 1911 Census; yet in all Records before and after thro Army, Marriage and Death etc he was just plain Harry ? We've tried to work out why but can see no obvious reason at all, his father Leonard lived another 24 years afterwards for example, so ??.

Wrt the tradional/family name Samuel, I'm sure you (as well as me) have seen cases where more than one son in a household are formally given that family name as their first Christian name, but they are henceforth referred to by their (differing) second names, presumably to avoid confusion within the household group. It would seem reasonable in such a case for your Samuel to re-adopt that name later in life when away from his siblings, especially as the Hiram name seems to have caused spelling problems. However in your case it appears to me that he was only ever Baptised/named/Christened as Hiram, not Samuel Hiram, so ???

There's nowt so strange as folk !

Thanks again, Jeff

Hiram Sterry b 1857, Longhope (reply)

I believe his name was actually Samuel [H]iram Sterry but haven't found his baptism either.

I believe this is his death entry in the GRO:
STERRY Samuel I, Newent, 5a, 511, 1, 1919, aged 66

He appears as Iraham Sterrey living with his family in the 1861 census and Hiram Sterrey still with his family in the 1871 census. He was Hiram Sterry when he married Emily Robinson in 1878 at Christchurch, Cheltenham.

In the 1881 census he is Heiram Sterry living with his wife and family. But in the 1901 and 1911 census he is calling himself Samuel Sterry and still with his wife and family. [I haven't found him in the 1891 census]

He did have an older brother called Samuel but Samuel had his own wife and children.

I have no idea why he suddenly decided to call himself Samuel rather than Hiram - especially as he had a brother called Samuel. But families were often terribly unimaginative when naming their children at this time - and certainly weren't as fussy as we are about the spelling of their names, including surnames - assuming they were literate at all - which of course many weren't or were minimally so.

The Hiram Thomas Sterry that you found born at Cheltenham in 1883 was indeed his nephew. And you're quite right about Hiram being a very unusual name amongst the Sterry clan.

Thanks for all your posts.

Researching STERRYs of Longhope and neighbouring area. (reply)

SO no obvious direct connection between the aforementioned Hiram Sterry and George Sterry at the top of this thread, but the Sterrys have been in Longhope (and neighbouring Huntley albeit perhaps to a lesser extent) since at least 1703 wrt this site's 300+ Sterry/Sterrey PRs.
For more PRs I see the surname has also been spelt locally as Sterray, and Stirry/Stirrey etc in earlier days , this couple appears to be the start of the Longhope line, purely judging from the oldest Longhope/Huntley PRs that I've found today, so by no means an exhaustive search;

Re name spelling variations, there is a Richard STYRRYE baptism b1580 in Ruardean within this site's PRs. Re early PRs for Longhope Church, it should still be remembered that unlike some Forest Churches within the "inner" high Forest, Longhope had a Church long before the 1500s. The excellent Longhope Village website explains it's existence back to Domesday times, see
http://www.longhopevillage.co.uk/history/church/
I see there is now a fledgling Huntley Village website, which shows Huntley's beautifully sited and appointed church is of similar ancient origins, see
http://www.huntleyvillage.co.uk/information/church/

I suspect this line has already been covered within this forum, but having found these PRs it seems a shame not to show them, hopefully will help the Sterry researchers in some small way.

And I thought researching the Jones name was tricky !!

Hiram Sterry b 1857, Longhope (reply)

Whilst searching "Lydney" within the Welsh Newspapers site I felt dutybound to look for Sterreys, altho I suspect our good friend Peter Essex has already done so. I'm pleased to say this fine upstanding family don't appear to have fallen foul of the press, however their Longhope cousins do get this mention, which I'm sure is forgiveable given the season;

From the Cardiff Times of 8th January 1876;

"LITTLE DEAN.
POACHING.— At the petty-sessional court on Monday, before the Rev. C.E. Dighton and Mr R.J. Kerr, Hiram Sterry and Benjamin Bennett, junr., of Longhope, were charged by Sergeant Mallet with trespassing on lands in pursuit of game. P.C. Young stated that on tbe 12th December he was on duty at Blaisdon, and about 9 o clock at night found defendants near the woods of Mr E. Crawshay and the Dowager Lady Crawley Boevey, with two dogs, and on searching Sterry he found a hare, which was warm, and the hairs of which were wet, and torn apparently by a dog.
Fined 10s. and costs.

George Sterry b abt October 1832, Longhope (reply)

By way of recap, as this has come up a few times in different contexts on this forum, probably the best source for Sterry/Sterrey info in the world is, as Jefff has mentioned, www.sterryworldwide.com. Basically there are three strands of Sterry/Sterrey from the Forest: the Ruardean line (the earliest Sterrys traced back anywhere by documentary proof), the Longhope Sterrys/Sterreys (such as George under discussion here) who are also documented back a long way, and the Minsterworth Sterrys/Sterreys (my lot) who are traced back by parish registers to 1794 but have recently been linked to the Longhope line by DNA and several of whom still inhabit the Lydney neighbourhood.

Hi Karen,
I haven't fully considered your post, yet, but first thoughts are

1. have you searched for old related threads, eg this one
http://forum.forest-of-dean.net/index.php?id=43444

2. I WAS going to ask if you've seen Robert Sterry's great website, or even emailed him direct to ask via his blue username icon ?. HOWEVER I see he's already contributed to one of your posts including a mention of your George I think, so presumably no luck there ?.
UPDATE !.
It seems the Longhope website displays better on web-browsers more recent than mine, having just checked on my son's pc which is much easier to read..
I think the above birthyear, 1833, is correct for George son of James & Eliza. The Longhope Census data for this particular one of the many Longhope Sterry/Sterrey households is consistent thro the 1851 & 1861 census, showing George b1833. It seems he's not in Longhope on the 1871, and the 1881 shows him married and aged 40 as per the original post-so not unusually he's lost a few years in his later years..
