Out of interest regarding one of your questions, Thomas Hillman was living in Llanfabon (often incorrectly spelled Lanvabon or Llanvabon) in the 1861 census, now part of the Borough of Caerphilly. MH.

Anyhow, back to our "Forest" Thomas Hillman and family, I also found this LDS hit, given the familiar names this interesting find looks relevant.

So looks like both brothers emigrated to the US after the 1871 England & Wales Census.

LDS carries other records of Thos/Nathaniel/Louisa Hillmans in Ontario etc which may warrant followingup, was the St Laurence River the route they took into the USA ? ..

Thomas HILLMAN b1821, and the Thomas HILLMAN from Forest (reply)

Yes, we found him in the end, another good team effort, well done one & all.
Like you I saw him amongst the LDS hits but I was thrown by the "St James" which I mistakenly assumed took to be another Bristol Parish (as are so often seen on LDS searches in Glostershire), seems you thought so too ?. More good learning for me !.

I think I'm right believing Ancestry have only recently added the 1851 Census to their database, a year or so ago they wern't showing it at all as far as I recall, certainly LDS still don't; hence I bought the 1851 Glos Census on cd.
As a FH newcomer this omission seemed a little odd given that Ancestry had the 1841 & 1861; is there any particular reason they didnt have the 1851 before, please ?.

------

Revisiting LDS, some of these I saw before, but as you say it's easier knowing of Louisa, especially when using the one-dimensional LDS so not seeing whole households.

Why is Louisa a WIDOWER in your 1871 Census, is this an error or perhaps a deliberate fib, and if so why ??

Here's their Marriage date:

Wales, Monmouthshire, Parish Registers, 1538-1912
Name: Thomas Hillman
Event Type: Marriage
Event Date: 10 May 1845
Event Place: Aberystruth, Monmouthshire, Wales
Age:
Birth Year (Estimated):
Spouse's Name: Louisa Noble
GS Film number: 2414902
Digital Folder Number: 004394435

------

Is this our Thomas in 1861, probably not ?

Name: Thomas Hillman

Once again I've advance-searched FoD PRs for all baptisms to Nat Hillman searching all various spellings, none found. Repeated for John Hillman to find:

358078 1816 HILLMAN John, John & Elizabeth WHITTINGTON, [not stated] [not stated] Ruardean
78472 1822 HILLMAN Temperance, John & Sarah, Staunton, Mason, Staunton

Not sure how these are relevant, but they look related to me:
8702 1818 ILLMAN Eliza, John & Sarah, Coleford, Mason, Coleford
8876 1823 ILLMAN John, John & Sarah, Col[e]ford, Mason, Coleford
8982 1826 ILLMAN Sarah, John & Sarah, Col[e]ford, Mason, Coleford

(NB there are only four Illman/Illmen PRs in the FoD Database. Given the Forest dialect I'm shocked I didn't search these earlier, although Soundex was equally careless!).

There are other later Hillman(f.John) baptisms but they're all related to Tin workers from Lydney area so I don't think relevant.

Nathaniel and Priscilla Hillman (reply)

Hi Nigel,
thanks for clarifying things, looks like you had quite a time searching out your travelling Nathaniels !, but what an interesting lifetime.

Must admit my straight answer is "No, there was no Thomas born in the Forest".
However clearly you have reason to believe otherwise and I have no reason to doubt you. It would though, I think, help if you could please clarify what your source is for this belief ?. Is is a Census record, or ??

Many thanks, Jeff.

Nathaniel and Priscilla Hillman (reply)

Thanks for your help. I am interested in the children of two Nathaniel Hillmans who were stonemasons;
1) Nathaniel, a journeyman stonemason (b. 21 Jan. 1776, Miserden) who married Sarah Padfield (c. 17 Aug. 1783, Kilmersdon, Somerset) on 06 Sep. 1801 at the Church of St Peter and Paul in Kilmersdon. The groom’s occupation was registered as a sojourner from the parish of Miserden. I though that Nathaniel and Sarah had five children; Hester (b. 25 Dec. 1803), Isaac (b. 1806), Sarah (b. 02 Apr. 1809), Mary Ann (b. 1814) and Thomas (b. 1820).

You kindly provided the following important information, from the Gloucestershire Baptism Index CD - baptisms after 1813, about Nathaniel and Sarah’s children born in Catswood;
i. Mary Ann, bap. 15 May 1814 - 1m.
ii. Helah, bap 09 Feb. 1817 - 1 m.
iii. Thomas, bap. 27 Feb.1820.
iv. Nathaniel, bap.16 Feb. 1823.
v. Nathaniel, bap. 20 Mar. 1825.

I have records that note the deaths, as babies, of the two children named Nathaniel;
i. Nathaniel Hilman, b.1823, date of burial 21 Sep 1824, place of burial Bisley All Saints.
ii. Nathaniel Hillman b.1825, date of burial 02 Aug. 1825, place of burial Bisley All Saints.

I WOULD LIKE TO FIND ANY RECORDS OF BIRTHS OF NATHANIEL AND SARAH’S CHILDREN BETWEEN 1801 AND 1813.
DID THEY MOVE BACK TO THE MISERDEN AREA AFTER THEIR MARRIAGE IN 1801?

2) Nathaniel Hillman (c.15 Apr, 1805, Bisley, f. Thos.) who as a bachelor of the Hundred of St Briavels, on 20 May 1823
married Priscilla Williams (c. 15 Aug 1802, Ruardean, Gloucester) a spinster of St Briavels in the Parish Chapel, Newland.

As Nathaniel was a sojourning foreman mason who specialised in railway infrastructure he continually moved around Wales
and England. I have details about the following children;
i. Elizabeth, b. 1831, Liverpool, Lancashire.
ii. Louisa, b.1835, Weaverham, Cheshire
iii. John, 1837, Penmon, Anglesey
iv. Ann, bap. 19 Oct.1839, St Botolph’s Church Newbold on Avon, Warwickshire; d. 25 Oct.1839 prior to burial in St. Botolph’s Church.
v. Mary Ann, c. 12 Jun. 1842, Reigate, Surrey.

I WOULD LIKE TO FIND ANY RECORDS OF BIRTHS OF NATHANIEL AND PRISCILLA’S CHILDREN BETWEEN 1824 AND 1831.
DID NATHANIEL HAVE A SON NAMED THOMAS WHO WAS BORN IN ‘FOREST’.

Thanks for any help. Nigel BOSWORTH

Nathaniel and Priscilla HILLMAN from Bisley, Stroud, Glos (reply)

Thanks MPG for your hard work, I have been beaten by this query and was waiting for one of you more experienced posters to show me the light. Last night I searched all the usual Dean & Glos free websites, as I'm sure you have, and found no likely hits whatsoever.
I'd be grateful for your opinion, but after searching the LDS site I found that Nathaniel Hillman and especially alongwith Priscilla Hillman doesn't seem a particularly common combination in the Records anywhere. Using the FoD PRs advanced search didnt give any remotely close hits to this family.

The Glos NonConformists site gives a set of apparently relevant Records for what looks like two or even three Nathaniel Hillmans;
first a Weaver from Miserden (Stroud district) and possibly his or his son's Will from 1805, a miller from Rodborough.
Secondly six Baptisms between 1805 and 1826 born to Nathaniel & Anna, he is a Baker again in Rodborough. I assume this baker is associated with the earlier miller, altho' the miller could have been in the weaving trade. No Thomas tho !?.
These Baptisms show the mother as "Anna F HEATH" - does this indicate they weren't married ?
http://ww3.gloucestershire.gov.uk/genealogy/Results.aspx
Clearly these Records appear to link into your findings re Bisley, North Glos.

My confusion last night, that Nathaniel and Priscilla have travelled around the country a lot, seems to have been born-out by your findings. I wonder if the family is linked to the waterways ?. I see Bisley is on the canal network..? That said the Glos NonConformist site's Canal Records Set didn't produce any of the above Records.

Nigel, what is your reference that Thomas was born in "Forest Glos". Is this the 1841 Census ?. I don't have full access to it but I do see some Hillman entries, possibly related, around Lydbrook & Newland amongst the above LDS hits.
I wonder if the "Forest" element is either an incorrect census entry or just not the Dean forest ??

Nathaniel and Priscilla Hillman

Nathaniel Hillman (b. Bisley 1805) married Priscilla Williams on 20 May 1823 in Newland. I know they had a son named THOMAS HIllman in abt. 1824 who claimed to have been born in Forest, Gloucestershire. Between 1823 and Nathaniel and Priscilla moved to Penmmon, Anglesey where they had a son called John in 1834.

Does anyone know of details relating to the birth of a Thomas Hillman f. Nathaniel in abt. 1824.
