2 x Giles Griffiths - common ancestry (reply)

After looking on the IGI and with help from Nolene and her Ruardean Parish Records Carol and I have put together the following scenario for both the Giles Griffiths. It looks as though both Giles have a grandfather in common as I think their fathers were brothers. Following the trail leads us possibly to a John GRIFIT and Dorothy who married sometime before 1679.

John GRIFIT and Dorothy married before 1679

Thomas GRIFFITHS (baptism date 20 April 1760) married Mary (unknown)
Children: All baptised Ruardean
Thomas bap 25 Aug 1782
Giles bap 5 Dec 1784 – buried 19 Oct 1788

It looks as though the two Giles Griffiths born about the same time are born to two brothers John Griffiths and Thomas Griffiths. Their parents were John Griffiths and Sarah Jones.

So where does the name Giles Griffiths come from??.

Hi Lorian,

I am glad you managed to get my e-mail. I read your post and you looked to be asking for information on who Thomas Griffiths mother was and who his sisters Alice and Amelia Jane married. I know who two of them married and if you look at this thread you will see that the Griffiths line has been traced further back.

I have also managed to find more information on this branch possibly going back to 1733.

If you still need the information on Thomas Griffiths mother and sisters please let me know.

Regards

Giles Griffiths 1801 Ruardean (reply)

Re Sarah Griffiths wife of Giles. There are two Giles both married to Sarah's.

There is a Sarah Griffiths burial on 9 Jun 1855 and she is aged 58 of East Dean. I think this is the Sarah married to Giles in East Dean with daughter Catherine.

I have just found this extract from the internet of parishioners who received "Outdoor relief April to September 1866". Ruardean (Ross Union) Payments made at Drybrook Fridays 1pm.

There is included in the list a Sarah Griffiths age 77, "Dead"

Could this be the other Sarah, the one I think is mine? She was alive in 1861 on the census. Doesn't seem to appear on 1871.

Aha!
Takes me a while but sometimes I get there.

1861 already provided to me by slowhands

1861 Turners Tump
Sarah Griffiths abt 1787 East Dean, Gloucestershire, England Head
Ruardean Gloucestershire
Henry Griffiths abt 1835 Ruardean, Gloucestershire, England Son Ruardean
Gloucestershire
Giles Griffiths abt 1857 Blaenavon, Monmouthshire, Wales GrandSon
Ruardean Gloucestershire

This looks like the Giles Griffiths family Im interested in, theres a Sarah and a Henry that match the 1841 Griffiths lot that has Mary . Question is why is Giles senior with James whom Im also linking to this family.

Giles Griffiths 1801 Ruardean Village (reply)

Hi

Im really excited about the 1841 entry for Giles Griffiths with daughter Mary.

I see there are 2 1851 giles Griffiths entries and both married sarahs.

As the "other" Giles Griffiths had a baby Catherine in 1841 Im thinking "my" (possibly) Giles is not the one shown on 1851 census, ie the one who had Mary and James in 1841. My reasoning is that the Giles on 1851 census has a 10 year old Catherine who would fit in with baby Catherine 1841.

Can anyone, ie Slowhands let us see 1851 census for the other Giles Griffiths, ie the one with no Catherine.

Hope Im making sense.

Hello Lorian

I have been reading the posts on your Griffiths with interest.

Some of these are my relatives.

The Amelia J Griffiths you mention is Amelia Jane Griffiths my great grandmother. Her mother's name was Harriet MEEK. James and Harriet moved with their family north, first to Chesterfield and then Amelia Jane married William George Cocksedge and moved to Barnsley area.

James Griffiths parents were James Griffiths and Jane and his grandfather was Giles Griffiths. Unfortunately I don't know which one as I believe there were two Giles born about the same time.

I would very much like to exchange information with you.
