William Henry JONES 1861 Whitecroft - Burial (reply)

I am a bit confused as to where William Jones got his money from. Family legend has it that he was the richest person in Tewkesbury and that he was the first prson to own a certain type of car in Tewkesbury (Rolls Royce or a similar expensive brand, no one is entirely sure anymore). If he was only a collier as the records state then where did all this money come from? My Uncle says that he turned ordinary furniture items into antiques and sold them in America for a lot of money but if this is the case then how did he go from being a collier to an antique maker? If anyone has any suggestions I would be very interested to hear them as William featuers in many family legends.

William Henry JONES 1861 Whitecroft - Burial (reply)

William died on the RMS Berencaria on the way back from Canada and his wife Emma paid for his body to be put in ice and brought back so he could be buried properly. Their grave can be found in Tewkesbury cemetery and is rather easy to spot as it is the biggest and consits of a large stone angel.

I am a bit confused becasue according to William's grave (which I have seen) he was 71 when he died in 1935. Admitedly the grave was not that easy to read but what makes you think that this is the same William? Thankyou very much for all your information, it has been most useful as I didn't know his wife's maiden name. I cannot thank you enough for your help.

I also know his second child (Maud Jones) was born in 1889 at the Railway Inn in Park End so when he married he stayed in the same area. Thankyou anyway for your help, it is much appreciated.

William Henry Jones born in 1861

I am trying to trace this ancestor's parents and his family as unfortunately I don't know anything about them. I know William was 74 (according to his grave) when he died on 23/4/1935 so he was either born in 1860 or 1861 in Whitecroft (according to my family). I also know that he married an Emma Jane Edwards who was born in 1859. Their first child was a Rose Amelia Mary (b.1881 in Parkend) and their other children that I know of were Dora, Herbert, Maud, Gertrude, Raymond, William, Riley, Harold and Wilfred. The family moved between Canada and England so some of there children are registered as being born in the United States (Dora, Herbert and Gertrude). In the First World War William served with the 1st Canadian BEF and died in 1916. William Henry Jones died on the way back from Canada on the Cunard White Star Line RMS Berengaria and Emma paid for his body to be put in ice so that he could be buried in Tewkesbury rather than at sea. As that is all I know about him I would be grateful if anyone knows a more exact date of birth or who his parents were. Thankyou very much for any assistance you are able to give.
