There are children born in Wotton-Under Edge from 1816 onwards of a Charles SINDERBY (Brazier, Tin Man) & Elizabeth - in High Street and Long Street. The family stayed in the area - and are on the 1830 Pigots Directory - George SINDERBY - Brazier & Tinman - Long Street. Family there 1841 census. Brazier means works in Brass - could be making the metal parts for the instrument?

Im doing research into my family name and have some detials, , i can trace back to 1821, but thats it at the moment? :)

dont overlook the Cinderby, Cinderley, etc variations

Monuments - South aisle/West end - Thomas Sinderby (d. 1812), by J. Pearce of Frampton; white marble tablet with a charming relief of violin, bow and open music book.

Well - it doesn't mean it IS my man - but it looks rather promising .. now I need to find out what it says on the plaque and then do a local search .. any suggestions of where to go from here, please? :)

I'd found his death, but seemed to have missed his birth, so that's great!

I can't wait to see if he's my man :)

I think that there is a marble commemorative plaque to Thomas Sinderby d.1812, in Church of St Mary, St Peter & St Paul, Westbury-on-Severn... the reason it feels a lead is that it apparently depicts him with a violin and bow in his hand .. so at last and at least there is a musical connection!

However I can find no picture of it, nor any contact details for the church..

Does anyone by any chance know the church and whether it is generally kept unlocked? Or who I might contact locally to follow up any local details about him?

I feel a visit may be required!

A George Sinderby (there are several!) is one of the chaps on my hit list!

Do you know where one would source wills such as the one in my link?

I have downloaded 2 or 3 from the Kew archives site .. which are remarkably twidderly and will need a lot of deciphering! They seem like a fabulous resource for seeing people's professions!

Wheatstone was involved in Organ type instruments - concertina etc , so the link to Bassoon is a possible :-)

Charles Wheatstone was born in Gloucester on February 1802 to William and Beata Wheatstone ( nee Bubb, father Samuel). William Wheatstone had a musical instrument making business in Gloucester and consequently Charles's first interests were musical. From a young age Charles Wheatstone conducted experiments on musical instruments and studied the scientific principles involved. In 1806 his father moved his business from Gloucester to Pall Mall, London where he not only made musical instruments but also taught music.

The firm of Wheatstone commenced in London in 1750, in the old Exeter 'Change building, near to where the Lyceum Theatre now stands. This musical instrument and publishing firm was founded by Charles Wheatstone's uncle, also named Charles (hereafter referred to as 'Uncle Charles').

Charles Wheatstone was born on 6 Feb 1802, at Barnwood Manor House, Barnwood, near Gloucester. His father William was a 'cordwainer' or shoemaker, who may have also had a musical instrument business in Gloucester. The family moved to London in 1806, and after the Exeter 'Change building was demolished, uncle Charles's business moved to 436 Strand, near Charing Cross. Thereafter, Langwill records father William Wheatstone at 128 Pall Mall from 1813 to 1823, at 24 Charles Street from 1823 to 1824, and at 118 Jermyn Street from 1824 to 1826

In 1818, when aged just sixteen, Charles Wheatstone produced his first known new musical instrument, the 'flute harmonique', a keyed flute of some kind. There is a novel keyed and free reeded 'flute' in the C M Collection, item C533, once the property of Wheatstone, though of French origin, which may relate to the Flute Harmonique. Charles Wheatstone's youth in general was much involved with science.

Given Wheatstone and Bubb appear in the Forest it is possible that a Cinderby / Sinderby link exists

Around this time most Sinderbys seem to live in and around Gloucestershire .. and were mainly various sorts of metal workers.

The bassoon is very well made (not the work of an amateur) and I would really expect to find a Sinderby who was a wood-turner at least, if not an instrument maker.

I have been Googling and researching left right and centre, and still haven't pin-pointed the right Sinderby..

The lack of a christian name doesn't help - nor does the lack of any dates! He could have been born any time from 1720 (at a push!) to around 1785/90!

I need somewhere which will have trades mentioned - the Gloucestershire Trade Directories haven't helped (just a metal worker found) .. and the census hasn't come up with the answer..

My last hope is parish records .. I think/hope they may list professions?

Sinderbys are to be found in Flaxley, Westbury, Longhope, Huntley, Ruardean, Churcham and Fretherne .. and possibly elsewhere!

I'd be really grateful for any help - even help with ruling some Sinderbys out would be very welcome!
