Richard Tschaka Roussel-Milner
I am the son of David A F H Roussel-Milner

If DNA evidence helps, I have a DNA connection who also traces their family back to William Milliner's Great Grandfather James Milliner b. 1733. And also another to Thomas Bond b. 1737, William's maternal Great Grandfather:

Thomas Bond 1737-1790
5th great-grandfather
James Bond 1768-1830
Son of Thomas Bond
Sarah Bond 1790-1860
William Milliner 1817-1892
Son of William Milliner
David A F H Roussel-Milner 1938-2009
Son of Arthur Andrew Henry Milliner
Richard Tschaka Roussel-Milner
I am the son of David A F H Roussel-Milner

This would suggest William Milliner wasn't adopted.

Francis Sidney Frank MILLINER, born in Ruspidge 1887 (reply)

Dear zgilding,
I am researching the Milliner family at present and came across this thread. Francis Sidney was the uncle of my father in law (now 89).

His mother was Bertha Evelyn Milliner b. 1901 and his grandparents were George Milliner and Emma Burrows. I recently told him about this story but he says he cannot recall anything like it. My father in law has already researched some of his ancestors (pre computer era) but the only thing he could find at the time which might relate to William was a 1811 marriage between Isaac Milliner and Sarah Bond in the parish of Hawkesbury entry no. 108. Also, an entry in the parish records of Old Sodbury, 13 Mar 1785 the baptism of Mary daughter of Isaac and Hannah Milliner.

As he says this is not conclusive proof that either of these Isaacs are Williams father and mother. Perhaps Isaac married twice but William always states that he was born in Bath, Somerset on the census returns.

This is an fascinating story that may have been handed down by William himself - a man of mystery? Certainly the 1841 census HO107 2993 931 18 5, Bendalls Building Lyncombe & Widcome, Bath adds to the mystery. It is difficult to read but it appears that he was living in a household of servants at the time perhaps he was a foundling that ended up here when he was older.

I would love to know if anyone has found out more about the mysterious William since this was first posted.

frank milliner was my grandfather - my father is bryan milliner who is now 88 years old is one of frank,s sons and apart from glynn (my namesake) is the only surviving child. I guess that makes you and I cousins. I read your information (frank in the forest story) with great interest as i was also researching the family history and was unable to obtain any info on his birth - if I can be of any help in providing you with any info i will gladly

MILLINER, Acton Turville (reply)

Looking back through the census data , there is a cluster of MILLINERs around Acton Turville / Old Sodbury / Cold Aston / Yatton Keynall / Leigh Delamare
in the area where Gloucestershire / Somerset and Wilstshire come together.

so seems plausible....

Francis Sidney Frank MILLINER, born in Ruspidge 1887 (reply)

My uncle has reliterated the story again over Christmas. He says that William was found wandering in the forest. He was about 3 years old and was dressed in velvet and had gold soverigns in his pocket. He / Frank was unsure as to wether William was his real name or was a name given to the family who took him in (presumably the Milliners). He did not mention any formal adoption, merely that he was brought up with the rest of their children.

We had assumed that this all happened in the Forest of Dean but further investigation and a chance correspondance with some distant cousins (the family several decades ago split in two - this half of the family live in America) - they have traced Williams father - Isaac Milliner and his mother Mary Beazer of Wiltshire however have their approximate birth dates and since Isaac was born around 1739 Leigh De La Mere and married in 1764 at Yatton Keynell, Wiltshire - (one known son Jacob born in Yatton in 1775) it seems unlikely that Isaac / Mary was his real parents (being somewhere between 70 - 80 yrs at the time of Williams birth.

Kindest Regards,
Zoe

Thank you once again, yes, your information confirms what I also have plus some!

It is somewhat of a puzzle this family legend. Would think that it was just a story told to a young boy but Frank also told it again to my Uncle when he was an adult. It obviously made a great impression on him!

I can't help with Frank Milliner's parentage, but would be very pleased if you could contact me by email about Frank in 20th century. After his wife Connie died he remarried in 1945 to Ada Colwell my aunt. He died before her
(she died in 1965) and I have no knowledge of Frank although I knew him in 1945 (I was 9 at the time). Would be pleased to exchange any information.

Francis Sidney Frank MILLINER, born in Ruspidge

Does anyone have any information on my Great Grandfather Frank Milliner. There is a family story that was passed onto my uncle but no one else that says that my great grandfather was adopted (wether formally I don't know) by George and Emma Milliner after he was found wandering in the Forest alone.

I have traced him to the 1891 Census - he was 5 (says he was born in Ruspidge).

I also have a copy of his marriage certificate to Constance Davis which states that his father is George Milliner.

However, I have been unable to track down any information concerning his birth certificate.

Wonder if anyone can assist.

Kindest Regards,
