I would suggest that you need to consider is the fact that in only one place (a relatively recent index) is your relative listed as Lia. On both the original index and the birth certificate, as well as the register of Lydney, he appears as Sia. You really ought to see for yourself either by ordering a copy of the register or by looking at the GRO index. I don't know where you are, but the GRO index is normally carried by the larger libraries in Great Britain and is available in the Mormon Family History Centres around the world. The Ancestry index is relatively recent and is, in places littered with mistakes. Having said that nobody is infallible - especially me :-)

Thanks for the replies to me query re Sia John Wooles. I now have the birth certificate which clearly shows Sia - and its obviously been indexed as Lia. I've filed it under Mysteries!

I am confused...the entry for Sia John Wooles is in Lydney for 1847 not 1872...is this the one you really mean? I'm sorry to say that I no longer have the copy of the register as it was passed on for checking. If it was transcribed as Sia by me then it would have been fairly clear that was the name, and as the birth certificate agrees with this I think you can be certain. It was also transcribed thus in the Mormon records and, although transcribed as Lia John on the Ancestry site, looking at the original GRO entry page, it also says Sia John. I hope that helps.

One of my Wooles family was baptised Sia John in Lydney 1872 (P209 IN 1/4). Intrigued by the name I sent for the birth certificate and it is definitely Sia. I'd be grateful of the person who indexed the Lydney baptisms for 1872 could confirm (or not) that the name is correct. Many thanks, Tomcrean
