Cinderford GP (reply)

Thank you slowhands for this further interesting information. It seems highly likely that Drs Bangara and Mitchell would have known of each other.
I wonder if George was also involved in the community and whether there is anywhere I might look for this information - newspapers etc? Your guidance appreciated........

Cinderford GP (reply)

I know of another Edinburgh educated doctor who practiced in Cinderford as a GP and also surgeon at the Dilke at about the same time :-

Dr. M.L.Bangara
was born at Mangalore in South India in 1881. After qualifying as
a doctor at Edinburgh University he moved to Cinderford in 1915
working in his own practice and at the Dilke Memorial Hospital.

In addition to his work as a doctor, he was an active member of
the community and a leading light in a variety of local
organisations including the Freemasons, Cinderford Horticultural
Society, Dickens Fellowship, Excelsior Band and Cinderford Male
Voice Choir.

Dr Bangara died of complications following influenza shortly
after his 46th birthday in 1927. The 'In Memoriam' pamphlet
published later that year shows the very considerable affection
and respect in which he was held in Cinderford.

Oakdene, Cinderford. (reply)

Thank you slowhands for all you have told me - more than I could have expected.

I shall follow up on the Oakdene School and also the Dilke Hospital.

Annie Dunbar (1891 census) was George's illegitimate half sister - David Mitchell was father to both.

George's first marriage was in Scotland (1888) - he did not seem to have much luck with his wives. I believe in the 1891 census he is shown as a widower.

I did find on Google a reference to a Dr.G.A. Mitchell setting up a practice in Yorkshire - late 1920's - and as he was born in Yorkshire this seemed promising. Howver, I did not receive a reply to my 2 enquiries.

I thank you again slowhands and send you best wishes from New Zealand......

George Alvrie MITCHELL - Cinderford.

George A. Mitchell was residing in 1913 at Oakdene, Cinderford. I presume Oakdene was the name of his house.

He was born in 1860 and educated at Edinburgh University - MB Master of Surgery - perhaps he was still in practice.

I know quite a lot about his early years in Edinburgh and time spent in London. His first two wives died early and there was a third wife - Constance.

Any information on George most welcome. I wonder if his house still stands?

Thank you.......
