Patience Nellie CROWDER 1893 (reply)

Note on Elizabeth Crowder's birth. It wasn't in America. It was in Canada. Philip worked in Ontario digging the sewer along Yonge Street and working on the railroad (across the Holland Swamp) while sending stories back to a newspaper in Birmingham. He had been a very active union organizer before he left England. When his first wife died he packed the three children up and returned home, where he married Emma and went on to have ten more children.

Patience Nellie CROWDER 1893 (reply)

Yes, that's us. Emma's maiden name was Harris (parents William Harris and Patience Roper). Patience Roper later marries Walter Rudd. I've been working on the tree in fits and starts. "Nell" was one of 13 so and one od my cousins, also working on a family tree named her tree "too many of us". The Crowders were coopers. A generation or two were in the B'ham area but I think they were originally in Shropshire.

Thanks again, Slowhands.

I think I may have finally solved the mystery regarding the name of Charles George Goss Clarke (born 1835 to William Clarke and Elizaeth nee Griffiths), and it wasn't by finding the mysterious Charles George Goss.

CGG Clarke had an older cousin (by 23 years) named Charles George Morse, who lived next door on Blakeney Hill.

There is a possibility, if not a probability, that the minister may have heard "Goss" rather than "Morse". Or am I stretching it a bit too far?

When my gran was christened, the minister asked "what do you name this child", and her mother said, "Patience Nellie, Sir". And that is how he christened her . . . as Patience Nellie Sir Crowder! Her siblings thought it was hilarious.
