Nurse Hannah Head (Taylor) - Funeral report. (reply)

Hi, i am the great grandson of Elizabeth Jane Taylor, my grandfather George Benjamin Taylor Duncan was born in Rosehearty Scotland but baptised in Coleford. His brothers and sisters were born in Barberton South Africa. In my father records i found Nurse Heads obituary so it confirms they were sisters. Her Grave in South Africa gives her age at death 2/7/1895 as 37 and 20 days. So that would make it 11/12 June 1858.

I was wondering what happened to her brother Benjamin Taylor and why he died so young? Also i did visit coleford last year to try and find the graves of Anne and Henry but were unable to locate them. I am wondering if they have gravestones.

Regards
Gary Duncan

Alice HEAD and John HUNT, Chepstow (reply)

Thanks for that Mike !

Interesting John was "in fact" born in 1881. ???

Seeing as Alice's father was a baker, and John was a waggoner, quite possibly working for his father who was a miller, it seems reasonable to think the couple met as a result of their parent's work.

Despite several searches struggling to definitely find John, or Edwin, in the earlier Censuses, locally or elsewhere.
???

However searching Lilian Hunt, witness at his wedding, I eventually find this record which seems relevant, our John's daughter ? (presumably from his previous marriage).

Nurse Hannah Head (Taylor) - Funeral report. (reply)

Hi again Jan,
thanks for your additional information, very helpful and interesting. I'm especially pleased you say how following FH you learn about other aspects of our history we didn't know about. I agree wholeheartedly, and think it a shame many folk just want to quickly chase names and dates as far back in time as possible. Indeed this is why my own family trees are till far from completion, as I find myself going sideways researching the bigger picture rather than back in time...
One subject that's always interested me since childhood is marine history, and since moving to West London in the mid 1980s messing about in boats, both on the Thames and elsewhere, has been a big part of my life. Yet I'm ashamed to say your first mention of the sinking of the Princess Alice passed under my radar. I've just been reminding myself of this event, still Britain's worst disaster on inland waters with upwards of 700 lives lost ! At least a lot was learnt from the subsequent inquiries with many positive actions moving forward.... perhaps Alfred's continued use of the name Alice was a deliberate effort on his part to commemorate not just his wife but also the ship and all the other poor souls lost that evening. It's good to see the name Alfred was also continued in your family.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sinking_of_SS_Princess_Alice

----

Regarding searching the graves of your ancestors, we posted Hannah's burial record earlier, at Staunton. (The one twixt Monmouth & Coleford, not to be confused with Staunton near Corse on the far northeast of the Forest).

Staunton church isn't included within the Memorial Inscriptions section of this site.

Searching for prior mentions of this Church within this forum gives these notes from 2017, happily all the links still work, hopefully it will help you.

"Re the burials in Staunton All Saints, I suggest you contact the church well in advance of your visit, hopefully they will be able to assist in locating the grave. Also don't forget that sadly many Churches lock their doors these days unless expecting visitors.

Online photos and Streetview images suggest the graveyard is well-kept and in good upkeep, so hopefully you can find the grave. I see there are other Morgans there too, I don't know if relations or not. Some of them have been named on the Find-a-Grave site page, but sadly not yours, yet.

Staunton is also the final resting place of world-famous engineer and metallurgist David Mushet, who along with his son Robert Forrester Mushet performed important pioneering work in steel-making at the Whitecliff and Darkhill ironworks, I see mentions of the Morgan name ? in these pages.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/David_Mushet

Nurse Hannah Head (Taylor) - Funeral report. (reply)

Hi MIke,
thanks for this, sorry for my slow reply.
Yes I'm inclined to agree this looks like a different Hannah.
And yes nowadays Beckford, a new placename to me, is considered part of Worcestershire.

This 1868 Gazetteer entry shows it has no obvious links to the Forest, especially Coleford on the far side.
J

"BECKFORD, a parish in the hundred of Tibaldstone, in the county of Gloucester, 6 miles to the E. of Tewkesbury, its post town. It lies on the confines of Worcestershire, not far from Bredon Hill, and includes the hamlets of Bangrove, Didcote, and Grafton."
thanks for clarifying things, sorry for my slow reply.
Also for reminding me of your earlier post re the other childrens' birthdates. I've searched FreeBMD but cannot find any likely records at all for any of them within the UK, I presume the spent most of their lives in S.A.

Nurse Hannah Head (Taylor) - Funeral report. (reply)

Hi Jeff
Thank you for your comments. Yes Alice also perished unfortunately, I have managed to see the original documents of the inquest, at the London metropolitan also the documents signed by Alfred identifing their bodies. Very interesting piece of history I new very little about,it is what started me on my family history journey.

Yes you would think Alfred would have avoided the name Alice, seems very strange, the stories told seemed to indicate that the loss effected him badly and his daughter Alice looked after him while Hannah was off nursing the sick, Alice was 30 when she married my Grandfather. My father was also called Alfred.

Elizabeth had several children, Florence, Alexander, James and George, I guess they must have become fairly wealthy to be able to travel backwards and forwards from SA so frequently. Unfortunately Elizabeth did die young in 1895,

I thought the Millbank prison connection may not turn out to be relevant, but it was very interesting to look at the history and yes the location now the Tate. This is what I love about FH it can turn up interesting avenues in social history which are great to follow up.

I will keep looking for the Hannah / Alfred connection in London.

I will be visiting relatives in Chepstow this summer and would like to see if I can find any remaining graves etc for Hannah/ Alfred / Alice, where would you advise to get this information?

Once again I am very grateful that you have taken an interest in my story.

Kindest regards

Nurse Hannah Head (Taylor) - Funeral report. (reply)

In the 1881 Prison Hospital record Hannah Maria gives her age as 33 (1848). She gives her birthplace as Gloucestershire, Becxford(?). On the same page is a Caroline TAYLOR, aged 34, who gives the same birthplace.

Hi Jeff,

1. Alice died too.
2. There were four children. Listed in one of my previous posts. But can only find local baptism for George.
3. Typo. She died 1895.
4. I found the prison records too but discounted them due to age difference. It is a big difference.

Nurse Hannah Head (Taylor) - Funeral report. (reply)

Good afternoon Jan,
thanks so much for your most interesting message. Yes we try to be helpful here, in my case perhaps I was too keen, but it was fun trying to piece together the story. It also all stays on the forum as a record for the future, so will hopefully be of help to other researchers of the Head & Taylor families.
What a life your family has had, so many twists n turns. Please can I ask a couple of questions, feel fit to only answer what you want to do.

1. What happened to Alfred's first wife Alice after their son died ? Not essential but would like to know out of pure interest if ok with you. The fact his next daughter was also named Alice suggests he didn't completely fall-out with his first wife despite his illness, I do hope so.
And what a terrible coincidence, the boat also being called Alice.... if I was in his position I think I'd be trying to erase that name from my memory, not give it to my next child, ah well.

2. You mention Elizabeth came back to Coleford to give birth to her children - it seemed quite normal in those days to return to your mother for childbirth. However you say children - did she have more than one, I'm not sure we looked for others but I only recall seeing the baptism record for one, George, so if you have other names and dates that would help. Especially if she returned from South Africa to give birth to them.

3. You say Elizabeth died in S.A. in 1884. I hope this is a typo error, and she lived a much longer life than that ?

4. Interesting you mention Hannah may have been at Millbank prison, in Westminster London. That building has itself a very interesting history, it's now the sight of the Tate Britain Gallery !. I don't know how common a nameset this was, but it does seem more than a coincidence and maybe the matron is indeed your Hannah. Have you found her later in life (sorry can't recall if we did in this thread) ? Re the Alfred Head inmate, as soon as I first saw your enquiry I thought there would be a London or Southeast England link, as that's a surname I associate with this area (I've lived in West London for 35 years and know some Heads), but not the Forest. I'm sure there were a great many men called Alfred Head in the area, and I guess the Prison in 1881 had a fair few inmates, so maybe it is just a coincidence ?. Again would be interesting to try and trace his life a little if possible. I see the prison's function changed shortly after the 1881 census, see
https://www.prisonhistory.org/prison/millbank-prison/

I look forward to your thoughts when convenient.
Thanks again for your interesting posts.

Nurse Hannah Head (Taylor) - Funeral report. (reply)

Hi All
I am so sorry I have not replied to the extensive posts I have been away for a few days, to be honest I didn't realise how much interest I would generate, im truly grateful for all the posts, still working my way through them.

I thought you may all be interested in the following:-

Alfred Head first marriage was to Alice Stevens and they lived in Camberwell, Alice and their son Alfred died when the Princess Alice pleasure boat sank in 1878. Alfred was a Baker in the old kent road and was so distraught that he slept on the floor of the bakery until he became ill, hence a stay in hospital nursed by Hannah Taylor, they married and Alice Head daughter was born. The doctors said that Alfred needed clean air for his lungs so the family moved to coleford where Hannahs parents lived and where she was born.

Elizabeth Taylor, Hannahs sister emigrated to South Africa where she met and married George Duncan in Port Elizabeth in 1884. I have found the family tree of the Duncans on Ancestry and have been in contact with a distant cousin. He has confirmed that Hannah was related, what we still cant find or work out is why Elizabeth emigrated, she seems to come back to coleford to give birth to her children and then goes back to SA, she died in Barbeton SA in 1884. George Duncan emigrated from Scotland in 1882 and was a very successful business man during the gold rush, opening general stores and investing in a gold mine.

I have found an entry on the 1881 census for Hannah Marie Taylor as a matron at the millbank prison, although I was unsure at first it was her because of the different birth year given as 1848, previous posts suggest she falsified her dob so could this be her, having printed out the census I find an Alfred Head listed as a soldier from Albury Surrey also on this census, coincidence !! I know that the prison was used as a medical facility, his age doesn't fit either.

would appreciate your thoughts.

kindest regards
Jan

Nurse Hannah Head (Taylor) - Funeral report. (reply)

"STAUNTON
THE LATE MRS. GEORGE MORGAN
As briefly announced in our obituary column last week, the death occurred in the early hours of Sunday, December 29th, after a short illness, of Mrs. George Morgan (75), of Victoria Cottage, Staunton. The deceased was a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Henry Taylor of Coleford. She first married the late Mr. Alfred Head, a Londoner, who carried on business in the metropolis as a baker and confectioner. Owing to the latter's ill-health, Mr and Mrs. Head later came to Coleford to reside. The wife entered the nursing profession and became a certified midwife. She was more familiarly known as Nurse Head, her services being greatly in demand, and she nursed cases over a wide area extending from the Midlands to Cornwall, her many excellent qualities earning her numerous testimonials. Nurse Head married Mr. George Morgan in 1929, and is survived by him and by the two sons of her first marriage. The funeral on Tuesday, December 29th at All Saints’, Staunton, was conducted by the Rev. L. W. E. A. Kelly (curate), assisted by the Rev. F. J. Hearn (Baptist minister, Coleford), with Mr. Christie at the organ. The chief mourners were Messrs. G. Morgan (husband), George and Albert Head (sons), J. Hunt. (son-in-law), Ben Constant (nephew), Tom and Fred Morgan (brothers-in-law), Hubert Gwilliam and S. Brooks (nephews), Fred Morgan, Gloucester, Mrs. Walkley, Cromhall, Mrs. A. A. Head and Mrs. F Wintle. Messrs. C. H. Williams, Harold Barnett, S Davidson and A. Turbill acted as bearers, and Mr. S. Wignell.
Elizabeth Jane Taylor (reply)

Thanks Peter.

That does seem fairly conclusive, especially given the Baptism record in Coleford, and possibly their choice of second names (Benjamin & Henry) for couple of their sons.

Also matches well with Mike Shepway's posts.

Thanks all, think we got there in the end.

Elizabeth Taylor born abt 1859 Whitecliff Newland area ?? (reply)

Hi again Mike,
apologies for getting my JAMES and my JOYNES in a twist when mentioning Benjamin's birth record, not sure why I did that especially after confirming it was JAMES on my earlier post.

Thanks for helping me see the woods for the trees.

J

----

Still confused why GlosBMD have JOYNES as Benjamin's mother tho.
Could this mean she (Ann) had been married previously ?

Or just a transcript error ?

Or is Ann not Ben's mother ?

---

Maybe best stick to searching Hannah & Elizabeth, as per the question haha
