Hi Lisa. I have a slight interest in the name Grindell. My ancestors are the Watts family from Whitecliff who operated a Pottery there. I have previously posted a message about them. A few of their children have the name Grindell as a second christian name and I am wondering why. I don't think they were related, perhaps just good friends. Grindell is a name that seems to pop up a bit in my research. I have 3 spellings for the name - Grindell, Grindall and Grindle. Also Rosser is another second christian name in my ancestry. Any clues?

If you come across a Lucy G in New Zealand , then this is probably the family in 1851 ( from the Collafield "cluster", which has links to the Littledean RUCK family )

I have the following information for my Grindell/Grindalls and have included most of my assumptions and what they are based upon.i would love to hear from anyone one who add further deatil; confirm or disprove; or of course is related.

1.Thomas Grindell (a carpenter on his sons marriage cert) married Mary Ann
Jones 24 Feb 1845 Newland GLO
A Mary Ann Grindle death registered June 1847 monmouth Is this her??
??He may have remarried to Elizabeth Ruck Mar 1/4 1859 Monmouth
A possible death for Elizabeth is Sept 1/4 1885 Ross age 83 born about 1801
A poosible death for 1.Thos sen is june1/4 1874 Monmouth died age 75

*Thomas (Junior)I believe to have been born 1845-46 Im basing this on age at marriage 27 & age on shipping list 30 in July 1876

A possible 1.Thomas is Thomas Grindle b abt 1796 a lodger with the Keal
Family(head was a carpenter) of West Dean He was unmarried, a Sawyer and
born in Goodrich Hereford.
1851 cen Jane Ruck b 1834 little Morton, a tinplate cleaner is a visitor at her sisters place of work Sophia Ruckb 1841 Bicknor is a nursemaid for William and MaryAnn Cooper The sisters are indexed as Buck but it reads Ruck on the census pages

*Thomas jnr married on 29 July 1872 at Baptist Chapel in Coleford to Ellen
Jones daughter of John Jones and Elizabeth Pinder. They left england with
two children Elizabeth - Bessie born 1874 died 19 jan 1884 and James b 1876
and had 4 more children Thomas b1878 William John b 1880 Charles b 1882
Helen Ada or Ida b 1884 and Mary b 1886 (My Great Grandmother) here in NZ
where they settled in Geraldine.

There was also a John Grindell b abt abt 1819 and died 1903 in Geraldine. I presume he was related to my Thomas. Although his spelling seemed to alternate between Grindall and Grindell.
