Benjamin WRIGHT MRCS, 1904 - 1993(?) (reply)

Belated but heartfelt THANKS Slowhands from me and my mother for all your clearly considerable effort on this enquiry. So it seems we don't have a Doctor Wright in our family, if we did and particularly so recent we'd have clearly know about him. Wishfull thinking perhaps but I've only recently discovered some Wright "cousins" in our adopted home town of Cinderford that we'd never known about at all, so it seemed a possible.

Thanks again, Jeff.

ps please don't risk crumbling any of your valued Mercurys for me in future, unless that is you intend to digitise them. If you have a mad moment and decide to do this then I'll gladly let you have the half dozen or so 1920s copies which my sister liberated for me when they left the old premises.

Benjamin WRIGHT MRCS, Westbury area, c1936 - 1945 (reply)

Thanks Slowhands.
Apologies for wasting your time, I have just found this RCS site myself and was about to edit my post accordingly when I found yours, sorry. Perhaps appropriately my pc's been full of a virus lately and is still struggling !

It seems that contrary to my expectations which I thought were reasonable, it seems there is no "simple" searchable database of their members. Even their website is less than clear, eg

"1. we may not necessarily come up with much information unless the ancestor was a Fellow of the College (FRCS)
2. If your ancestor was solely a member (MRCS), it is unlikely that we will hold any detailed information. See clarification of the difference between 'MRCS' and 'FRCS' in a historical context"

I had assumed this statement would be followed by a link or somesuch to this clarification, probably within their website, but it seems not !??.

Anyhow, I guess there is a database, but not a public one. Either way in this instance it's irrelevant as clearly the RCS route isn't appropriate for Benjamin. It appears the RCS prefer to continue to charge individual research fees rather than signup their Archives to one of the big FH websites, which is fine. It's also good they indicate in advance they don't hold Members records, and don't charge excessive search fees either. However I still feel their website could be clearer, as shown by the rather more FH-friendly approach of their "equivalents" in Scotland.
http://www.library.rcsed.ac.uk/content/content.aspx?ID=10

This pdf booklet from the Royal College of Physicians gives many helpful links for those researching ancestors within Medicine; it also serves as a reminder that this complex area has many different facets each with their own proud traditions and histories.
http://www.rcplondon.ac.uk/sites/default/files/family_history_research_guide_1.pdf

Thanks anyhow S for helping with a search which is harder than I'd anticipated, and for adding the BT references too which are a great help.
If nowt else we never stop learning about interesting new things with this hobby, do we ?, which can't be bad and is often very good. I've just been reading about the continuing problems at the Westbury Practice, ridiculous in this day and age. I will write to them via the Newnham office but I suspect they've far more pressing matters to attend to.

Benjamin WRIGHT MRCS, Westbury area, c1936 - 1945 (reply)

Thanks to you all for helping clear up the Inquest query.
However this leaves me with the question of the aforementioned Benjamin WRIGHT MRCS which is beginning to asnnoy me now, it would be nice to find an academic ancestor however distantly related.
I don't think he is one of the few Ben Wrights included within the FoD PRs.

As well as officiating at Westbury On Severn area Inquests (in this site) around 1936, I've searched the British Newspapers Archive site and found him again officiating at Inquests regarding Severn drowning(s) in spring 1945.
The Gloster Journal states "Doctor Benjamin Wright of HUNT'S HILL Westbury on Severn".

Hunt's Hill is just north of Westbury village towards Chaxhill...

Please does anyone know of how I might further research this person ?.
Does Ancestry or any of the other subscription sites carry databases of Members of the Royal College of Surgeons, for example ?.
Is there a database of old GPO phone books, either online or at a public Library ?

Meanwhile I shall try and contact the existing GPs at Westbury in the hope they may know something.

Many thanks, Jeff.
On behalf of my mother, who's always Wright even when she's wrong... ;-)

Thanks Mike,
perhaps oddly given my normal bad "luck" it just never occurred to me the Inquest could have a "transcription error. Thanks for checking it so very soon and correcting the error.
At least it seems my sanity is now just "in question" rather than definitely lost, and that those named Fanny are almost always of the fairer sex and certainly hardly ever colliers !!
So doesn't look like this is "the" Benjamin Wright MRCS then, not surprisingly really given it's a fairly common name in the area at the time. Still a possible relative tho' so deserves my further study especially given the Aston link.

Inquest of Fanny BALLINGER died 1936 Blakeney (reply)

Jefff,

I have just checked the original inquest page and it seems I must have got the previous entries occupation details mixed up with Fanny Ballinger's, all other details are correct.

It should read Wife of Thomas Ballinge , Farm Labourer

Hope that will help you work out who she is now. I will get the transcribed page updated with the correct details.

Inquest of Fanny BALLINGER died 1936 Blakeney

Please can anyone help clarify some key individuals in the following Inquest off this site ?.
http://www.forest-of-dean.net/inquests/php/popup.htm?../images/H240.png

The Inquest is for a "Fanny Ballinger aged 84 years, who dies after falling on the bathroom floor at No 1 High Street Westbury-O-Severn on August 1st 1936, a collier".
The Inquisition was at P.A.I. Westbury, attended by Benjamin WRIGHT MRCS.

I have Severnside Ballingers in my C20th line and wonder if this is a relation, similarly the officiating Surgeon Wright ?.

My first query is regarding Fanny's sex ?. I've extensively searched this site's PRs, GlosBMD and FreeBMD for a likely birth about 1852 but without luck, searching both Ballinger and Bellinger as experience has taught. There are a few un-named "female" Ballingers/Bellingers registered which are possibles, but the Inquest states "a collier" which to me suggests a male ?. In my experience Fannys are always females, sometimes baptised Frances. Could this Fanny perhaps have been a male Francis, was Fanny ever used for a male, surely Fran's more likely ?. Besides, this is far too recent to have been a female collier, isn't it ??.
So am I placing too much emphasis on the "a collier" note, or ???

Here is the Burial, from this site's PRS, ditto on FreeBMD;

Record_ID: 3435
Entry_Number: 477
Year: 1936

If anyone can please add some more details to the life of this person I'd be very grateful, thankyou.
Similarly the Surgeon/Doctor Benjamin Wright, please ?.
I imagine there are searchable Registers of the College of Surgeons which might help place him more closely ?

This site's PRs only lists four Benjamin Wrights. IF this Doctor is a local man this seems the most likely candidate, as far as my search parameters were concerned it's coincidental he's also from Blakeney area but may perhaps help his case ?, a shame his occupation isn't stated !

This is an intriguing find as I also have Astons in my tree, albeit distant.

I believe this is the related Birth, from GlosBMD;

Birth Details

?????

This site's Inquests database holds a total of five attended by Doctor Wright, all within 1936-1937 and all in the Westbury area.

So, if anyone can please help me find out about Fanny Ballinger/Bellinger and Benjamin Wright MRCS I would be very gratefull, thankyou, Jeff.

PS
I've answered my final query wrt "P.A.I.".
Via this great Forum I know "Number 1 High Street Westbury" was used as the "p/c" address for the old Workhouse c1900s. By searching the Workhouses Website I find P.A.I. meant Public Assistance Institution, the new name given to the old "Workhouses" when they were officially "abolished" in 1929. Even as late as 1939 there were still almost 100,000 people accommodated in the now Council-run P.A.I.s, almost 6000 being children. It was not until the National Assistance Act of 1948 that the last vestiges of the Poor Law disappeared, and with them the P.A.I./Workhouses.

---------------------------------------------------------------

I'm sorry I am unable to include the full Inquest details either as an Image(I did try but cannot work it out, sorry), or by copy & pasting.

Note to Admin: is it possible the site could be tweeked to enable us to copy & paste text from Inquests, or copy the entire image, just as it already allows easy text copying of Wills for example as per the PRs ?. Or if it's already possible, please explain how ?. I have found several Inquests on this wonderful site that relate to my family tree, including perhaps this one, and it's a little tedious but more worryingly prone to error my typing them out in full, rather than copy & paste. I hope this can easily be achieved.
Thanks as ever, Jeff.
