Thanks for your email - it was really useful. I was able to cross reference my findings and was able to see that your family followed John 1785, son of Richard and Margaret(Hemming) of The Old Grange, Dymock, married Ann. Mine are linked to his brother George (Kempley Court Farm, Westhide) whose first wife was Mary (Palmer) 2nd wife Anna Maria Cummins in 1839.
It's been an interesting journey. They certainly had large families, with interesting details. Visited Donnington Hall and the other homes in the area and went to Churches in the area and Ledbury. Found references in local books and graves.

It was really interesting to read how the family came to be land owners. (In King Henry's reign) Any wealth they had seems to have been lost in the early to mid 19th century. A couple of years ago we went to Norfolk and visited St.Michael Church in Irstead where John Skipp the 1st was born.

Hope you have found it interesting too - guess we're cousins (several times removed)

Hi Chris - Yep there appears to be 2 born during that period. The one married to Dinah following the line of Richard and the other of brother George. I have a small booklet which was written about Upper Hall which I found in Ledbury giving the line from John I 1574 down to John 1V 1707-1796 and an item from Skipp Papers about his son (John V)
an artist & wood engraver, attended Merton College, Oxford 1760, mother Penelope Symonds. Can email more details direct if you are interested - pretty compulsive this family history isn't it - regards Jenny

Thanks jennyandfamily for the information on Donnington Hall. Your logic with the Will of 1750 is very conclusive for a John Skipp who was buried 1750/51 (old style date) FOD record 270589, given as 19 Jan 1751, at Donnington. My concern is over the birth/bpt year of 1707. The FOD have only one bpt record for the year 1707, and nothing else near it. It is ID399258 on 14 Nov 1707, for father John esq, mother Jane resident at Ledbury. There is however a burial record for a John Skipp, ID323982 on 7 Apr 1796 with an age given as 88. [I wish there were more death ages available!] This indicates a birth abt 1708! I have put the dates 1707 and 1708 into FamilySearch and still only get the one for John Skipp, son of John and Jane for 14 Nov 1707. I have this John Skipp (1707-1796) married to a Penelope Symonds and wonder whether you have her on your tree and what your comment would be on the birth year of your John Skipp married to Dinah Davis? Perhaps there were two, one born in 1707 and the other 1708?

Hi Chris - I know how you feel having tried to sort through the many 'John Skipps'!
My great great grandfather being one of them! I guess the Land Registry might be the answer to who owned Donnington Hall and when. A National Newspaper reported it being bought by George Skippe in 1671 and then later owned by Admiral Sir Arthur Dairymple Fanshawe, a former aide-de-camp to Queen Victoria who became commander of the Navy Fleet between 1910 & 1913. From the National Archives an abstract from John Skipp's will dated 1750 January would indicate the John we have been discussing 1707-1750 married to Dinah Davis who I have as being the son of John 1684-1777 (baptised Donnington) married to Jane Willington. Quote: Last will and testament of John Skipp of Donnington. The beneficiaries are Dinah his wife and his sister Anne Skip and John Skipp the younger of Overhall, Ledbury. John Skipp leaves Donnington Hall and the Court to Thomas Pyrke and John and Anne Skipp ... Buried in the Sanctuary of Ledbury Church. Note re: The Grange at Flaxley - this property was given to George 1700-1783 (son of Richard 1673-1715, brother of John,and 2nd wife Elizabeth nee Pyrke) by her sister Mary married name Young (their father was Thomas Pyrke - as in will?) Family buried in Flaxley need to be confirmed again (definitely Joseph Lloyd Skipp) others found in Dymock Church - hope this makes some sense. Regards Jenny

I am seeking help from the experts on the owners of Donnington Hall, Donnington, Ledbury during the late 17th and 18th centuries. All googling only brings up recent activities. I know it was occupied by the Skipp(e) family from at least 1681 to 1766, with the most recent FOD record 94347 that I could find being the marriage of a John Skipp to Ann Goodman on 26 Apr 1766, both being resident at Donington where the marriage took place and their first marriage. The problem here is which John Skipp was this and of course did he live at the Hall? With so many John's and repetition of other forenames different family trees show different linkages, which are difficult to confirm or otherwise. In any case, your relationships seem to be unique in the world of family trees but as a direct descendant more likely to be correct than the host of trees that have no citations! The majority have Dinah Davis (or Penelope Symonds) married to a John Skipp(e) (1683-1751), as a son of Richard (1637-1715)and Elizabeth. Whilst I have found the baptism for your John (1684-1777) on this wonderful source FOD, I haven't been able to find any record for the death/burial. And why "John 1707-1751 who married Dinah Davis (buried at church near The Grange, Flaxley)" in particular? Am happy to continue discussing by email at calaughton@yahoo.com, if we can make the connection!

Not sure if you received my email so will outline again - John Skipp 1684-1777 son of Richard 1637-1715 married Jane Willington. Sons Willington 1706, George 1710, Thomas 1711 and John 1707-1751 who married Dinah Davis (buried at church near The Grange, Flaxley). Their sons Thomas (Perk) Pyrke, John (1743-1819), George Shaw, Richard and Robert. My line is Richard 1744-1785 (The Old Grange, Dymock) but as cousins Richard Skipp & Elizabeth Skipp married in 1826 at St.Nicholas Church, Gloucester I am still trying to clarify who their parents were, as this was not on the marriage certificate that was available online. Thanks very much for clarifying which John Skipp it was that will be a big help. As far as the Whateley Estate is concerned I got confused over the mentions of Tamworth, Staffordshire for their marriage on 17 Sep 1702 until I saw the reference in this Forum 14 Mar 2013 to "The Willingtons of Whateley and Tamworth are known from Whateley Estate in Gloucestershire". And that they "are descended from a John Willington who died 8 Aug 1617" - in "A Genealogical and Heraldic Histoy of the Commoners of Great ..., Volume 4", but I'm sure you know all that anyway. I have looked at my records and find that John Skipp 1684-1777 married Jane Willington. He was baptised at Donnington in Hereford and was the son of Captian Richard Skipp 1637-1715 of Donnington Hall (Vicar of Ledbury 1686 memorials in Sanctuary & Chancel at Ledbury Church) 1st wife Margaret Mahen, 2nd wife Elizabeth Pyrke. My research took me back to Irstede in Norfolk where the Skipp (Skippe) family originated and John Skipp Bishop of Hereford and Almoner to Ann Boleyn was born. He never married but ensured his family were looked after with properties in Ledbury including Upper Hall, Ledbury.

I was interested to know the link to Whateley Estate in Gloucestershire as that is where I live - do you mean Whatley Manor which is near Malmesbury?

I have been working on the Skippes and Skipps of Ledbury but have got stuck over finding the right John Skipp in the following context. A John Skipp Esq of Ledbury, of whom there seem to be several, married a Jane Willington of Whateley on 17 Sep 1702 at Tamworth, Stafford and had 6 children, 4 boys and 2 girls, the latter baptised in 1705 and 1709 at Ledbury and Tamworth respectively. The Willingtons of Whateley and Tamworth are known from Whateley Estate in Gloucestershire. I would like to make the connection between the Willingtons and the Skipps of Ledbury but am having difficulty determing which of the Johns in the descendants of those who first went to Ledbury from Norfolk, this John might be. Any help and guidance would be greatly appreciated. ChrisL

Thank you for replying to my message. All named had the surname SKIPP. My gran was Agnes daughter of John Skipp whose father Isaac Thomas died when he was only 6 years old. Isaac's father was Robert. I have proof up to this point then it has been more difficult to confirm, apart from knowing that Robert was born in 1791 baptised in Colwall, parents Richard & Mary and that Elizabeth was also a SKIPP when she married in 1826, parents George & Mary. Both died in Staunton, Nr. Newent.

Other branches seem to have contacts at Flaxley and Overbury Court, Worc.

Confusion is added by repartition of christian names! Help!

Any published literature etc. would be appreciated - thanks.

The SKIPP's had links to Colwall , close to Ledbury....

The family had its origins in Norfolk, but some branches settled in Herefordshire in the sixteenth century, and one of them, John Skippe, was Bishop of Hereford 1539 - 1552.
An Alice Skippe married John Willason of Sugwas and thus connected the Skippe's wife a family who acquired considerable property in Ledbury by taking leases of the portion of the overhall (the Ledbury benefices was in two portions, the Netherhall and the Overhall) and by purchasing lands which before the Dissolution had formed the endowment of Charities in Ledbury Church.
The properties descended, through the death of the heir to the Willason family, to John Skippe of the Upper Hall who died in 1619. The Skippes in suceeding generations added to their inheritance by buying up further properties in Ledbury and by acquiring a share of the Ledbury Crown Lands sold by Charles I.

Our branch of the Skipp family seems to have come from the Ledbury, Herefordshire area, and moved to Monmouthshire around the 1850's.
About that time, Thomas Skipp, my ancestor, went to India. If you are interested in the little booklet about "History of the Skipp Family" 15th Century
