Newnham Artillery Volunteers (reply)

A quick search for the Newnham Artillery Volunteers led me to the Morris & Co. Directory of Newnham 1876, which includes a particularly detailed description of the town. It also mentions under Gentry:

"CARTER Maurice Frederic, Esq., (Capt. 3rd. Gloucestershire Artillery Volunteers), Banksian house.

And under Trades & Professions:

"CARTER Maurice Frederic, solicitor, commissioner in Chancery and Common Law, perpetual commissioner for taking acknowledgments of deeds by married women, coroner for the Forest division of the county, clerk to the magistrates for Newnham division, to the commissioners of taxes for Newnham and Coleford divisions, to the Local Boards of Health for Awre, Newnham, and Westbury-on-Severn, to the Rural Sanitary Authority and the Board of Guardians, and vestry clerk for Westbury-on-Severn, superintendent registrar, distributor of stamps, and agent for the Mutual Assurance Society, Banksian house"

I see there was (is?) a residential address listed for some named residents called Artillery Place, presumably where the Volunteers drilled ?, hopefully without firing live charges as this appears to be a "desirable" address !.
LATER UPDATE - In fact this is still an address in Newnham, its near the river, maybe if and when they were using live ammunition they shot at the river to avoid collateral damage ?. See postcode GL14 1BH.

Also listed under Trades is "SIMMONDS Mrs. Ann, builder, High street" - Tom's mother presumably ?

More about the Glos Artillery Volunteers here. It seems a little odd to read that Maurice Carter served in the 3rd, which was apparently based at Gloucester, when the 2nd were based at Newnham. Both were formed in 1860 - perhaps in the early days the Newnham area had more expertise and manpower than Gloucester did. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gloucestershire_Volunteer_Artillery#Volunteer_Artillery_1... did ?.
