Thanks for your help and the research you have carried out. Will try and look for information on the churches you suggested when I go to the archives in Gloucester. It would have been a lot easier if I found a marriage but somehow don't think they married
2. What, if any, are your thoughts re which Church or Chapel George b1824 might have been Baptised at ?. I suspect you already know what the choice was in the area at that time, whereas I'd have to research the local history (not my patch at all) and then still only make a lessthaneducated guess.

I'm thinking about Angela's visit to the area this weekend.

Thanks in hopeful anticipation, Jeff.
Parkend is where I would look for a CoE Baptism, followed by Lydney and Bream

If the family is non conformist then one of the Methodist transcriptions ( or similar) such as Coleford or Monmouth Wesleyan

Hello again
Your info on the 1851 census seems very interesting as Clearwell is close to Whitecroft. I will research this area and try and trace them through the census. One of his daughters was called Jane could just be coincidence. I am only new to this game and I am learning as I go on. Thanks to you all

Thanks Paul,
yes I realise it does look rather compelling evidence that this is the correct family, but as yet no certainty that George is a brother. I'm asking as I, like you gents, would very much like to be able to confirm to Angela that she'll definitely be on the right trail when she visits; I even dreamt about this search after finishing my searches last night !.

George Jones b1824 (reply)

Brother?

The 1871 England Census return for Allerton Bywater, Yorkshire reads:

Victoria Street No. 48
Allerton Bywater
John Jones - Head - Mar - 43 - Coal Miner - Gloucestershire, Forest of Dean
Harriet Jones - Wife - Mar - 27 - Gloucestershire, Forest of Dean
Elizabeth E Jones - Daughter - 9 - Gloucestershire, Forest of Dean
Fanny Jones - Daur - 7 - Staffordshire, Hill Top
William Jones - Son - 5 - Yorkshire, Newton in the Willows
Anne Jones - Daur - 2 - Yorkshire, Newton in the Willows
George Jones - Visitor - 48 - Coal Miner - Gloucestershire, Forest of Dean

Unfortunately the return does not give the relationship between John Jones and George Jones, instead listing him simply as a visitor.

James & Daniel JONES born Hewelsfield area c1826 (reply)

Hi Slowhands & Paul, thanks for confirming the 1841 Census, my cd scans weren't too clear. Please can you comment on the following, thanks.

1. As per my suggestion above, I realise it's a very difficult search but is there any point in trying to find eldest brothers James born Hewelsfield c1824 and Daniel born Hewelsfield c1828 in the 1841 Census, I can't help think they'll be together and I wonder if this will lead us to find George if indeed he is their brother ??

I've searched this site's Marriage PRs for both James and Daniel, father James, but no luck thus far; I wonder if they've moved away from the area and perhaps taken George too ?

I guess it's almost impossible given their names but one lives in hope ??

From this site's 1841 Census data, which I'm still struggling to piece into households, could these be them ?, if so where:

JONES Daniel 10 HEWELSFIELD 3 365/7 5 (so born abt 1831-??)
JONES James 17 WOOLASTON COMMON 3A 369/6 22

(However there's also this older James, I think(?) in the same household (wrt the numbers ?)
JONES James 40 WOOLASTON COMMON 3A 369/6 22

Assuming that common folio numbers do indicate a household ?, then the rather more searcher-friendly youngest member or "our" James & Mary Jones household is elsewehere:
JONES Vencention (fem) 1 WOOLASTON 3A 369/6 6
(This name appears similar to my 1841 Census image which was a very poor one).
So it looks like the above mentioned James aged 17 is either a different family, or ours but maybe lodging with his employer ?. Difficult !

(Still impressed you found John etc !)

PS Re the unusual but refreshingly helpfull daughter's name above, from this site's PRs:

GEORGE JONES born about 1824 in Whitecroft (reply)

In 1881 George's daughter Emma is aged 4. When George died in 1891 his daughter Emma would have been 14 and his daughter Eliza 7.

1891 England Census
12 Edward St
Westoe
Durham
District 25a
RG12/4157; Folio: 102; Page: 48

Francis Jones - Head - Widow - 40 - Charwoman - Durham, Hylton
Emma Jones - daur - 14 - Durham, South Shields
Thomas Jones - son - 13 - Scholar - Durham, South Shields
Jane Jones - daur - 9 - Scholar - Durham, South Shields
Eliza Jones - daur - 7 - Scholar - Durham, South Shields
George Jones - son - 3 - Durham, South Shields
Isaac Jones - son - 4 mo - Durham, South Shields

The reason I asked if you knew the name of the informant was because I thought that Emma at 14 years would have been young to give the information to the registrar, and I wondered if there was another older child. On reflection, considering Frances' situation with such a young family, I accept that Emma was probably the informant.

PS

Just read your last post to S where you mention the death of Isaac in 1891. Confirms my comment above about Frances' young family.

George JONES born about 1824 in Whitecroft (reply)

Hello I also found the 1871 census of a George in Allerton Bywater and thought this could be him but then drew a blank as I had no way to back it up. It will take a while to digest and understand all of the information I have received and then decide what I have to do next. I also knew that Frances Jones remarried a Matthew Woodhouse on the 18th Sept 1898 she also lost a son the same year as her husband in 1891 he was under one year old. She must have had a tough life.Cannot thank you all enough for the information, will keep you up to date on how I get on

Many thanks

GEORGE JONES born about 1824 in Whitecroft (reply)

Hello Jeff
Thanks for info. will take a while to digest all information. What a fantastic site. I have no idea where the Thompson comes from in their childs name as Frances Tomblings mother was called Emma Duckworth and her father John they were born in Ripon. Could not trace her fathers parents he was also called John Tombling and he was born in Wiffin Norfolk. So the Thompson name is baffling.
I also came across the 1871 census and thought this could be him and maybe a brother
living in Allerton Bywater Yorkshire but got no further the ages matched but as you say George Jones is such a common name in the FOD. Will let you know how I get on , cannot thank you enough.

M<any thanks

John JONES born about 1836 near Whitecroft (reply)

Wow !, thanks gents, great work, very cunning indeed.

First, for Angela's benefit, the 1881 Census transcript posted by supersleuth Slowhands quoting "Wolverston Glos" as place of birth for John should read Woolaston, on the Severn very near Lydney & Whitecroft (I don't know any Wolverston in our County at all).

Secondly, I've tried searching out John in my 1851 Census cd and think this is him, a close match for Paul's suggestion born 1836. (I cannot see any households with a George in too). As well as being clearly the best match wrt parents, witness & locality out of several "possibles" in the Census, it also nicely echos the 1881 mention of Woolaston.

2443 1851 CENSUS HO107/2443 FF.0482-0494 ED.1A LYDNEY 3
JONES Harriet DA - 3 - GLS Woollastone [Woolaston] (c1848)

A shame they're not miners but this is before the mining boon really took off. Given the size of the family perhaps no surprise if one of the eldest brothers might have flown the nest ?

I've also found the above household on my 1841 Census cd, not the best quality scan but it's clear that the oldest child present is Sarah, sadly no George or even James & Daniel in this instance, perhaps they are all together elsewhere ?.

Many and more of the above Baptisms can be found on this FoD site's PRs, the earliest are at Hewelsfield Chapel with the family resident in the Hart Hill & Brockweir Common areas.

GEORGE JONES born about 1824 in Whitecroft (reply)

Hi Angela and a warm welcome to the forum.

I'm a Jones from Dean, and last year I researched miners in Seaham, but sadly thats where my "speciallist" knowledge ends on this query. However hopefully we'll be able to help you.

To recap, heres the 1881 Census in full, from LDS

"England and Wales Census, 1881"
Name: George Jones
Age (Original): 60
Birth Year: 1821
Birthplace: Whitecroft, Gloucestershire, England
Relationship to Head of Household: Head
Marital Status: Married
Occupation: Coal Trimmer
Address: 49 Princess Street
Daughter Emma Jones F 4 South Shields, Durham, England
Son Thomas Jones M 3 South Shields, Durham, England
Daughter Jane Thompson Jones F 0 South Shields, Durham, England

Sadly for us both, and as I'm sure you know, Jones is statistically the most common surname in the Forest, and George isn't rare either !. At least the Whitecroft record is a good start, more precise than many.
Unfortunately I don't have full access to the Censuses, but looking at this site and also LDS for the 1861 Census these are my initial favourites assuming George is still in the area

"England and Wales Census, 1861"

HOWEVER there are quite a few possibles, but these two seem mostlikely given age & location, both near Whitecroft.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Whitecroft

But see all these too !

Searching this FoD site's PRs gives 16 George Jones baptised 1821-1825, I prefer these:

As Whitecroft's Chapel didnt exist before 1824, it seems likely George would have been Baptised at nearby Bream, Parkend or Lydney. (Of course thats if he was baptised soon after birth, if at all.)
If you "locate" Bream on this map, zoom out to see Whitecroft just to it's northeast, the map shows the various chapels in the area. Then as now Lydney was a bigger, older town, being a port on the Severn.
http://www.forest-of-dean.net/maps/parishmap.php

This website has reminiscinces & photos of Whitecroft including the Chapel.
http://www.coghlan.co.uk/whitecroft.html

The Chapel was the first Wesleyan Methodist Chapel in the Forest, in 1824,

==========================

Angela, I too havn't been able to find the Marriage Record between George and Frances. However I'm intrigued by the name of their youngest (?) child, Jane Thompson Jones. Could the Thompson be a surname clue perhaps to Frances' family ?. I ask as to properly trace George's birth then we need to track him thro the Censuses as best we can, so all clues can help.

Again using FamilySearch, searching the 1841 Census for George gives several possibilities !!.
https://www.familysearch.org/search/record/results#count=20&query=%2Bgivenname%3Age...

???

UPDATE:
Foolishly I forgot I had the 1851 census on cd.
Checking that gives, again, a few "possibles" including in Newland which is not too far from Whitecroft and by far the oldest Church in the area, bearing in mind 1824 or so (I wish we were certain) was early days in terms of Dean chapels & church building. However PURELY based on location how's this household seem to you ?.

Clearwell is very near Whitecroft, then again they could easily have travelled all over the Dean in George's lifetime before 1851.

2444 1851 CENSUS HO107/2444 FF.0026-0041 ED.2A COLEFORD 1
Piece: 2444 Folio: 0030 Schedule: 005

Address: Clearwell

JONES Jane HD W 60 Ag. Lab. Widdow GLS Newland (c1791)
JONES George SO U 30 Ag. Lab. GLS Newland (c1821)
JONES Mary GD - 6 - GLS Newland (c1845)

????

The correct way to narrow down all these possibilities is to trace them all thro the various Censuses etc, but this is beyond my ability I'm afraid.

Hope this helps if only a little,
wishing you a pleasant trip to the Dean next week,
Jeff
