St Pauls Newport (reply)

St. Woolos is probably the parish, you're right, although on the document it looks more like "G Woolles." The best I can make out the other name on the document is "Forster Sohwin Curst" or something.

Thank you for the additional information, it's interesting to hear about where they were living. Thanks also for the information on Wanglers and Bakers.

Stephen SMITH of East Dean, born c. 1812 (reply)

I said I would post a transcription, so here it is. It seems to match up perfectly with the Stephen Smith I was after:

1854. Marriage solemnized at St. Paul's Church in the Parish of [illegible] in the County of Monmouth

No. 417
When Married. May 11th 1854
Name and Surname. Stephen Smith, Mary Baker
Age. 41, 46
Condition. Widower, Widow
Rank or Profession. Collier, -
Residence at the time of Marriage. 71 Commercial St, 71 Commercial St Newport
Father's Name and Surname. late Benjamin Smith, late Thomas Nicholls
Rank or Profession of Father. Laborer, Farmer

Married in the Church of St. Paul according to the Rites and Ceremonies of the Established Church, after [illegible] by me, [illegible]

This marriage was solemnized between us, Stephen Smith [his mark], Mary Baker [her mark] in the Presence of us, William Wangler(?), Susanna Wangler(?)

So, now I'm looking for a laborer named Benjamin Smith who was born sometime in the second half of the 1700's, died before 1854, and lived in East Dean circa 1812. Does that description sound familiar to anyone?

Stephen SMITH of East Dean, born c. 1812 (reply)

Thanks for the help. Looking through possible marriages on FreeBMD I tend to agree that the marriage between Stephen Smith and Mary (Baker? Walter?) in Newport looks like the most promising, especially considering that there aren't any in the Pontypool district or the Forest of Dean area between a Stephen Smith and a Mary during that time. As you noted, Jane Smith, daughter of Stephen Smith and his first wife, was born in Newport. Unless something else comes up soon, I'll order that marriage certificate within the next week or two from the GRO and post a transcription here.

As for any connection to other Smiths in the area: it's probably too hard to tell by the last name alone whether or not there is a connection, but maybe we'll figure one out soon.

Olive Elizabeth Smith
Lived in Littledean as a child (white house, lady Hyde?)

She gave birth to Lovell Glendower Tresham in 1906 to a Jack Tresham in or near Cheltenham. Gave birth to Maud Olive Millard 1920 Southend on Sea father William Millard (name on birth cert) or William Ross (Durban South Africa, person identifed as father when child) or Samual Millard (married under the name Olive Beale, Independent chapel Littledean which may be the name the birth cert was based on).

I have quite a bit of information on her but the birth cert she had is belived to have been obtained for frauding a pension in Canada so is not reliable none the less it has her down as:

Stephen Smith of East Dean, born c. 1812

I have a census record from Trevethin, Wales indicating that Stephen Smith (who I believe I am descended from) was born in East Dean, Gloucestershire about 1812. I haven't been able to find any records for him in the area, unfortunately. He married a woman named Ann sometime before 1836 but I don't know when or where that would have happened. They had three children: Jane, William, and Mary, all of whom were born in Wales. Ann died sometime between 1842 and 1851, probably in Wales. Stephen later remarried in Wales to a woman named Mary, who was apparently also born in East Dean.

Does anyone have any information or leads about Stephen Smith from the East Dean area? Baptismal and marriage information would be especially useful.
