Thankyou - I will have a look. When I put in a Google search I wondered why nothing useful came up. And I had no idea about the Dick Whittington stuff!

Paeford or Payford (reply)

Now its written as Payford (as in Payford Bridge, Payford Mill ), rather than the way its recorded in 1851 census.

http://www.old-maps.co.uk/
Co-ords 374435,229328

This maybe the same building, although the local Directory for 1870's suggests a new school at Pool Hill.

The Old School House, Payford, Redmarley,GLOUCESTER. UK. GL19 3HY.

Its situated near Pauntley Court - home of Dick Whittington- looks like the school was supported by the landed gent at the Court.

The Education Act 1870 being one of the key pieces of legislation in school reform, so I guess this was a private rather than state school , but not in the sense of an Eton or Harrow :-)

Pauntley 1851 entry - Eliza PAYNE 1827 (reply)

Yes - this is the right Eliza. The placenames queried are Seddlescombe and Orr. I know Eldridge went on having children, 10 with Charlotte and apparently helped financially with Henry James. Certain members of the family knew of him, some not.

John Pain/Payne and Mary Morgan

Hello all,
John Pain/Payne b.c.1790, Newent and Mary Morgan b.c.1796, Newent were my 4 x great grandparents. Their daughter Eliza was a schoolmistress for James Eldridge at Pauntley, where he 'wronged' her and she had a child Henry James Payne b.1852, Ruardean. Mother and child soon moved to Clun, Shropshire where she died.
I would love to know anything more about John and Mary (especially seeing in this message board that there is a Morgan Society!)and also the school.
Any help is very much appreciated, as I am stuck on this heritage and also stuck on the other side of the country!
