Great Western Iron Works Soudley

by Roger Griffiths, (5441 days ago) @ admin

I too think these photographs are from the 1890's. The two furnaces don't look as if they have been in fire for sometime. Maybe not since 1877. The site was apparently bought for the slag heaps. A slag crushing machine was brought in and the slag removed by rail (for roadbuilding?) Perhaps these photographs show that phase.

Industrial History of Dean by Cyril Hart should be available through the Library system. I must have taken it out from a Hampshire library.

Family of John Samuel Priest - Lydbrook

Family of John Samuel Priest
http://www.forest-of-dean.net/gallery/lydbrook_2/

Taken we think in the late 1880s or early 1890's and is the family of John
Samuel Priest b Coleford 1837 died 1894 (buried Lydbrook).

John Priest was the Manager of the chemical works at Oakwood and Lydbrook until
his death. We believe the lady sitting is his second wife Ellen Priest formerly
Gwilliam nee Payne b 1841 in Marston Sicca and died 30th March, 1898 (buried Lydbrook).

We are as certain as we can be that the girl on the left is Mary Priest born
1876 the daughter of John Priest's first wife Hannah Mason born 1837 died 1880
(buried Lydbrook)

The other girl we think is one of her sisters Louisa born 1875 or Clara born
1871 and the baby possible Eleonor Daisy Priest born 1884 the daughter of John
Priest and Ellen.

The only thing written on the back is 'To Mary with love from Clara'

We are just hoping that someone might recognise them, a rather forlorn hope but
you never know.

Possibly Alfred John Wintle 1837-95 at Bill Mills, Weston-under-Penyard.
Can anyone contradict?
