Dardanelles Straits, Turkey, WWI (reply)

Yes Slowhands,
as you say a fitting tribute. Only last month within my family researches I found the girl's name Dardanella, seemed rather a mouthfull !. My family were baffled by this until I reminded them of the infamous Gallipoli Campaign, this was in the Dardanelles Strait in the Turkish Balkans. I've only found this one example in the FoD Records, but judging by FreeBMD this name was quite widely used for girl's born between early 1915 until mid 1917. This coincides entirely with Gallipoli and I've no doubt the names are in honour of the many Allied soldiers & sailors who suffered & died there.
Many of these Births are registered in Monmouthshire, the South Wales Borderers were part of the ill-fated landings, I suspect this was John James's Regiment. Also prominent within these Births were NorthEast British areas such as Tyne & Tees, again this is reflected in several Scots Border regiments serving in this Campaign.

As per your original post, rather unusual if not unique names but a delightful and fitting tribute to the heroes whose names they were helping perpetuate.

Mametz Wood was the objective of the 38th (Welsh) Division during the First Battle of the Somme. The attack occurred in a Northerly direction over a ridge, focussed on the German positions in the wood between 7 July and 12 July 1916. The attack of the 7 July failed to reach the wood before the men were halted by machine gun fire. Further attacks by the 17th Division on 8 July failed to improve the position.

Ann Grindle letter to George Grindle in the US (WW1) (reply)

Hello Barbara,

I read your post this morning.

I also descend from Bertha's brother, George Hubert Grindle. Tracy and I are cousins. And I guess we are, too!

I'd love to compare notes with you on the Smith family. I did some work on the family a year or so ago, but only what I've been able to find on this wonderful site.

Look forward to hearing from you.
