Slowhands

You're much more detailed in your 'print-outs' than me.... (and I've got to cook Dinner!!) but I've gone through the 1891 census for Brierley

Mary A MASON age 25 and a niece is living with James EDWARDS and his wife/family - page 19

the next family is James MASON - 57 Stone Mason + his family,

however on the next page 20 of 22

there is

Robert PENN - age 26 Coal Miner
Eliza wife age 23
Chas MASON age 2 born Brierley
and a daughter age 3 months

Is this Charles Enoch MASON - ??? - Ancestry have transcibed him as CHAS PENN - although it does read Chas MASON

Benjamin MASON 1811 Ruardean (reply)

Hi Slowhands

I have Benjamin Mason 1811 in my Family Tree, as son of George Mason & Mary Tippins. I have the 1861 Census, not included in your report :

1861 Census East Dean RG9 1754 266
Benjamin Mason 60 widower Stone Cutter East Dean
George 24 Stone Cutter East Dean
Mary 21 East dean
Benjamin 18 Stone Cutter East Dean
Elizabeth 16 East Dean

I have details for 5 children of Benjamin Mason 1811 & Olivia Cooksley 1811, including the fact that their daughter Mary Ann Mason 1839 married George Mason 1833, son of Nathaniel Mason 1798 & Elizabeth Robbins and that Nathaniel 1798 was the brother of Benjamin Mason 1811.

I have Benjamin Mason 1811 & Olivia Cooksley 1811's son James 1863 as spouse of Emily Amelia Gillo, with their son Benjamin Mason 1860 marrying Emma Jane Wiggle. with 3 children including Olive R born 1889.

What I cannot do is spot the connection to Charles Enoch Mason 1888. Can you help me there ?

I too am enjoying the serialisation of Winifred Foley's book in the Daily Mail and would love to find the connection to her.

Winifred FOLEY nee MASON 1914 (reply)

I too was saddened to hear of the death of Winifred Foley.

She did indeed meet her husband Sidney in London and bore three children, two boys and a girl. For a time, they lived in a flat above a rather grumpy old lady who was always complaining. Winifred was afraid to let her children make too much noise, something she always regretted I believe and it was one of the reasons she returned to the Forest of Dean, so her children could enjoy the freedom and space as she had done as a child.

Winifred wrote a further book, entitled Back to the Forest, recalling her time in London and her life with Sidney after they married. This book too, was full of humour and wonderful characters. One book she wrote, quite a small one, was entitled No Pipe Dreams for Father (Scenes from a Forest of Dean Childhood), another gem!

I've enjoyed reading, not just about Winifred but the lovely way she described the characters who lived in The Forest of Dean. Her childhood, reflected my own at times, although I could not always see the funny side of my childhood as she did with hers!

I think she was a wonderful, kind, humorous lady.

Winifred Foley

Just thought the members of the Forum would be interested to know that the Daily Mail (UK) is serialising a book, by Winifred Foley (Full Hearts and Empty Bellies).

Winifred was born in 1914 in Brierley, Nr Cinderford - daughter of a Miner. She died last week age 94 - this book is due out on Thursday (republished) Her other books are listed on the 'net'.

The Daily Mail has extracts on its online website, plus photographs.

Saturday's article - has highlights such as : Bloomers tied with string, pigs' bladder for footballs, whole families sharing a bed and a quote 'We learnt to chew slowly to make food last'

Monday's article - is when Winifred reached 14 and this birthday meant, for a daughter that she was old enough to get her feet under someone else's table or, in the case of a son, that he could follow his father down the pit.

and Tomorrow's is entitled : A first kiss that led to heartbreak.
