Shortly after I kickstarted my online genealogical research during the pandemic, I realized through my searching that if I wanted to find ancestors from West Dean I would have to search in both Monmouthshire and Gloucestershire, since Monmouthshire shifted back and forth between being part of England or Wales for many years. Some of the ancestors ended up in Wales, others stayed in Gloucestershire while others moved to Yorkshire. Only a very small few of them ended up elsewhere in England, usually through marriage or after retirement.
