Chidlren of William Clarke (General)
The youngest brother -- Charles George Goss/Cross{?) has been accounted for. Since he is not mentioned in his father's will, it is fairly safe to assume the "child of William Clarke" buried at Blakeney Baptist in 1837 is Charles . . .
Henry has been a bit of a challenge as well, but I think I've managed to find him in a few more census'. In 1841 he is eight, living with his father on Blakeney Hill. In 1851 he is living in Garndiffaith, Trevethin. (I should have looked their earlier, considering I knew that was where his brother Richard was living at the time.) In 1861 he is back on Blakeney Hill, age 36, living with his wife, Ellen. Haven't found a marriage for them, but she was born in Oldbury, Glos c. 1838. (Henry, born Blakeney Hill, 1831).
After that, I cannot find them. I have checked the death index, probate records (he inherited a messuage and orchard from his father, so one would think he would have left a will to be probated. I also checked emigration . . . No joy.
Ann, c. 1809, William Clarke's daugther with his first wife, Hanna Williams, died in 1812, as did Hanna. Their son Thomas, c.1806 also inherits from his father, but I have no leads on him at all, nor on William and Elizabeth Griffith's eldest son, William c. 1817, also in his father's will.
Ann, c 1818 marries Thomas Virgo 13 August 1838 in Newland; they had a large family they raised in Gibraltar, she was buried at Viney Hill 27 Feb 1895.
Richard c. 1820 we know about. I still haven't managed to find the four children he and Sarah Ann Vining had who did not survive to adulthood yet. If they were stillborn there might not have been a record . . . all I know is that in the 1911 census, when I would have thought Sarah Ann would have listed having 3 children born, she said she had 7 children in total, three of them living.
And Eliza has been a subject of this thread. So . . .of the eight children, I've lost Henry but had at least a few leads on him, but can't trace Thomas or William at all. The names are too common, and none of the contenders thus far have been a perfect fit.
I'm sure I've made some foolish mistake -- this site is a lot more user friendly than I find ancestry.uk -- on ancestry even when I think I've put in the same search terms I don't always get the same results. And sometimes a solid lead (Elizabeth in Thornbury comes to mind) but it doesn't make immediate sense to me and I discard it too early. Or potentially too early -- jury is still out on that one.
Chances are if we run them to earth they're not any further away than Yorkley or Viney Hill. Richard was living in Yorkley at the time his father's will was proved (1845-46). I think I've reached a dead end here, so if anyone has any suggestions I would be grateful. Again. Or is it still?
