Thank you again Slowhands.
I doubt if there will be any way I will be able to find exactly where certain addresses were over 100 years ago.
However, I have a couple more I'd like to locate just in case anyone has any other ideas. They are: 'Novello' Ruardean Woodside and 'Hain Villa' Ruardean Woodside.

I have just joined the Forum.
Your entry was sometime ago but my Grandmother lived in Hain Villa Ruardean Woodside and my Uncle lived at No 2 Hain Villa. I spent many happy holidays playing on the green and in the woods.
I have pictures of how it was before the extensions.
May I ask what is your interest as we are trying to trace the roots of the HALE family on Ruardean Woodside.

Hi to one Geoff from another, welcome to the forum and website.
In case you've not seen it, there is an excellent book about the Hill and it's inhabitants which may interest you; "Highest Point of Dean" published in 1985 by keen local historian Maurice V Bent. That said there's only a brief mention of the Hales, Jim (1900-1981) and his parents, but there may be other info regarding Hain Villa and the area.
I don't know if the website contact page is still being monitored by it's owner Glyn Hale, but this extensive Hale website may possibly help in your researches, altho I guess you've probably already seen it.

If you do wish to contact Glyn, this old post may help http://forum.forest-of-dean.net/index.php?id=38698
Hope this helps, Jeff

Hazle Villas Drybook Ruardean - poss 1960s

In 1881 five chemical works produced a range of substances by distilling wood, including charcoal, pyroligneous acid, tar, and naphtha, and employed a total of c. 130 men. (fn. 24) The oldest works, near Cannop bridge, were in use in 1835, (fn. 25) and George Skipp, who manufactured lead acetate there in 1841, (fn. 26) built similar works in the Oakwood valley near Bream in 1844. (fn. 27) In 1854 the Oakwood factory belonged to Isaiah Trotter of Coleford. (fn. 28) The Cannop factory later produced sulphuric acid and crushed charcoal for making lampblack. (fn. 29) At the Upper Lydbrook works, established in 1857, (fn. 30) Samuel Russell produced naphtha in 1859 (fn. 31) and the Broadmoor works, built north of Cinderford by John and Thomas Powell c. 1864, later made lead acetate. (fn. 32) In 1870 the firm of Chapman & Morgan operated the chemical works some way south of Whitecroft. (fn. 33) S. M. Thomas took over the Lydbrook factory in the mid 1870s, (fn. 34) acquired the Cannop and Oakwood works c. 1890, and sold them all in 1894 to Thomas Newcomen, who ceased operations at Oakwood and Cannop in 1900 and 1902 respectively. (fn. 35) The Whitecroft works, which had closed by 1883, (fn. 36) may have been in use again in the late 1880s and early 1890s (fn. 37) and the Broadmoor works were abandoned before 1900. (fn. 38) The Lydbrook factory, which also made foundry blackings, remained in use until c. 1933. (fn. 39) In 1913 the Crown built distillation works at Cannop to turn waste and unsaleable timber to profit. The factory, beside the Severn & Wye railway next to the Mitcheldean-Coleford and Lydbrook-Parkend roads, produced charcoal, tar, alcohol, and acetate of lime. Run by the Ministry of Munitions during the First World War, it was idle from 1919 to 1924 when it was sold to Wood Distillation (England) Ltd. Following a reorganization of the company in the late 1920s the factory was modernized and in 1935 it employed 22 men. From 1960 it produced only charcoal (fn. 40) and in 1971 it was closed. (fn. 41)

Do you know if this would have been a pub in 1956?
Location: Ruardean Woodside
Address:
Postcode: GL17 9UL
Information:
Ruardean Woodhouse is a straggling settlement half a mile to the south of Ruardean.
The Roe Buck was situated just above from the Memorial Hall in Forest Road.
The Bradley family ran the pub as a free house for many years, eventually selling out to the Alton Court Brewery in Ross on Wye.
Stroud Brewery acquired the business in 1956 and the Roe Buck sold Cotswold Beers brewed by the Stroud Brewery until closure.
The site of the Roe Buck is now occupied by a residential development called Roebuck Meadows

The land, the subject of the application, is known as Roebuck Field. This is an area of some 4 acres in size and
bounded on the south by the Memorial Hall, Roebuck Meadows and Marfell’s Way; on the north by The Patches a
public highway; between residential premises fronting Wesley Road on the western side, and premises fronting
Duttons Lane on the east.
The new development at Roebuck Meadows and Marfell’s Way stands roughly on the location of the former Roebuck Inn,
demolished as a precursor to this development. At present the only formal access to this field lies along
Marfell’s Way which abuts the field, ending at a vehicular gate and a stile. There was until a few months ago,
an easy pedestrian access into the field along the side of the memorial hall. This has now been fenced off by
the objector. The field itself slopes down from the east.
It is grassed with the western most half being cut fairly short, whilst the eastern half being rather
scrubbier in appearance. Three mature Sycamore trees stand in a line at the entrance to the field off Marfell’s Way
marking the division between cut grass and scrub.

Roe Buck Inn Ruardean; Lewis Bradley - Wigan RFC
by Jefff , West London, Middlesex, Tuesday, January 23, 2018, 19:23 (2546 days ago) @ slowhands
Regarding the above-mentioned BRADLEY family who ran the Roebuck Inn for several generations, young Lewis Bradley gained considerable fame as a rugby player at Pontypool and then especially at Wigan Lancashire. I stumbled across his interesting story a few months ago while researching another thread about the Roebuck Inn, his life story is covered in detail in this excellent magazine from 2004, the article starts at page 18.
https://www.wigan.gov.uk/Docs/PDF/Resident/Leisure/Museums-and-archives/archives/Past-F...
I now belatedly see this subject was covered by the venerable Slowhands in this old forum thread from about the same time, perhaps he was involved in researching it ? As can be seen, sadly Lewis' promising career at rugby's top level was ended by WW1. This thread also covers Lewis Bradley's family tree.
