Just been absorbing your thoughts on travel within the area. Of course - the waterways must have helped enormously. So distances were not necessarily as great or as difficult as they might appear on the map. And of course walking 4 - 5 miles to work would have been normal for some - as it was to get to school before buses became the norm ! If legs were the only option, one developed a pretty efficient pair ....
