Breams Eaves (General)

Hi all

I've just got some info through about my lot on the electoral rolls in the 1930's.

Up until 1938 they're listed as being "Breams Eaves, Bream." In 1939 they're at 64, Council Villas, Parkend Road, Bream -which we knew though somehow we always thought they'd moved earlier than that.

We have pictures of the house in Parkend Road. But are there any old photos online of Breams Eaves and the old cottages there where they might have been living prior to 1939? I'm sure there are in a very obvious spot and this geographically-challenged Aussie just isn't finding them. Some of the Preests had cottages at Breams Eaves according to the 1909 Land Survey, so I wonder if they were living in one of those?

And, if I'm looking at things rightly, Breams Eaves and Parkend Road are pretty much side by side as the crow flies - so am I right in thinking that they could have carried a lot of their goods and chattels to the new house in 1939 without too much fuss?

Yes

you are in the right place The Eaves , or Bream's Eaves, or Bream Eaves etc ( North East corner of Bream)
is found on the Parkend Rd heading north out of Bream, and on the Whitecroft Rd heading East out of Bream.

Is it possible that they did not move in 1939 but that the address in the electoral register just became more precise, the council houses were built between the 2 WW's ?

After the First World War there was much new building in the Bream area. From 1923 houses were built by West Dean rural district council, and by the Second World War dwellings, including 64 council houses, lined the Parkend road as far as Knockley Cottages, a pair of houses to the north-east built by the Crown in 1909 for the Princess Royal Colliery Co. Later council houses were on the east side of Bream’s Eaves. There development of the Hillside estate, south of the Yorkley road, began in 1948 with the provision of 20 bungalows (later replaced) and continued in 1992 with the construction of 14 houses under the sponsorship of the district council and a housing association.
