Richard Tummey/Toomey ....Sheep Stealing (General)
Thank you for the information Stephanie. It is very much appreciated. Firstly , if you have the Inclosure map, would you mind replying giving the number of the plot the Toomeys lived in ? I have a copy of the map also, together with a list of the landowners at time of inclosure so i will be able to find it.
The Toomey family are really doing my head in. I am descended from William Toomey born in Churcham around 1785 but unable to find any record. I know that he lived in Birdwood for more than two Census returns. His next door neighbour was his son George. Other neighbours were stable for the same census returns. The cottage leased by Richard Toomey at time of inclosure together with some others nearby, four of them by a stream in the centre of the common, were demolished by 1882 with only a couple of old apple trees remaining in 1970 from the orchards. I have been able to plot them on modern maps.
If you can let me have your email address, i can send you the images i have showing the location of the old cottages on a modern map. If i knew how to put them on this site i would.
I have a theory that my ancestor William Toomey was a son of Richard Toomey who leased the cottage at Birdwood. I believe this Richard Toomey died in 1812 in Churcham. In all his life William Toomey listed his place of birth as Churcham.
in 1809 he married Elizabeth Burnett at Churchdown and his first born in 1810 at Churchdown was a son William. Then his next born was a daughter Harriet in Churcham in 1813. My theory is that he returned to Birdwood on the death of Richard in 1812 and took over the lease of the cottage. Just a theory. I think there is information in the Dean and Chapter of Gloucester archives. I have seen on line that there are bundles of documents relating to the cottages on Birdwood common owned by them. If you are going there i can send you the details of the ones i think might be fruitful. I would love to come to England to look through these archives but my wife is not interested in family history research but does love shopping. I am concerned about the effect on my finances.
Regarding your John Toomey. I believe he was born in Churcham 10th April 1774, with brothers Benjamin and Richard. his father was Richard Toomey (convicted of sheep stealing), Grandfather Thomas and Grandmother Mary.
I must express my sincere thanks to the members of this forum who in the past have provided me with invaluable information and also tips on how to interpret different information sources as well as providing links to new sites which have proved invaluable.
