George STERRY (& Wm LEA) of Longhope, Welsh papers, c1910 (General)
While researching another Longhope subject I stumbled across this news item which I thought might interest the Sterry researchers. I don't know which George this refers to.
LONGHOPE CASE FAILS
George Sterry, of the Slade, Longhope, labourer, was charged by Police-constable Hadbourne at Littledean yesterday with stealing two shaft tugs, britching, and strap, the property of William Benjamin Lea, of Hopebrook Farm, Longhope. Mr. G. Trevor Wellington, Gloucester, defended.
Mr. Lea stated that defendant had often worked for him. He left on the 5th of last February. Later witness missed the property, and reported the matter to the police.
Police-constable Radbourne deposed that on talking the matter over with defendant he consented to witness examining the harness in his (defendant's) stable. Witness there and then found the two shaft tugs (produced) and took possession of them, because they corresponded with the description Mr. Lea had given him. After Mr. Lea had identified the property as his, he again saw defendant, who declared it was not Mr. Lea's property, as he bought it off Mr. Bradley.
Mr. W. A. Bradley, grocer, Littledean, said he had had dealings years ago in old harness with the defendant's son.
Cross-examined: Witness would not swear that he did not sell these very articles to defendant's son.
The case was hereupon dismissed, Mr. Wellington submitting there was no evidence upon which the magistrates could convict.

(W.A.Bradley was in fact a shopkeeper of Little London, near Longhope, and not "Littledean", an understandable reporting error).
