Hi Mike,
thanks for explaining why I couldn't find my Alice Maud BUTTERY and her "husband" Richard BUTTERY on the 1911 Census, just before I sat down for dinner. Just my luck another Alice Maud Buttery, who was clearly NOT nee Vaile, was also born in 1880.... Ah well, at least I got Harold's marriage correct ;-)

A query if I may wrt understanding your 1939 Register transcripts, I have no experience of this database yet.

"The 1939 Register places them in Dudley and tells us that Alice married again.

I'm sure I'm missing the obvious here, but if Alice didn't become a Hornsey until 1948, how does that surname get a mention in the 1939 Register ?.
Again, not disputing your findings, just confused by that line, sorry.
