John J P SAUNDERS died 1896 Lydney, "lave net" fishing (General)
Another prior thread gives details of John JP Saunders' death in 1896;
http://forum.forest-of-dean.net/index.php?id=44422
thanks to MPG, we know the newspaper stated
" middle-aged man John SAUNDERS, living in the neighbourhood of Lydney Dock, died very suddenly on Friday whilst fishing with a lave net."
The subsequent Inquest stated he died due to "atheromatous disease of the aortic valve". This is a heart complaint, which I think is usually associated with old age, yet John was just 39 !. I wonder if it was brought-on by being stood waist-deep in the very cold water.
see http://www.forest-of-dean.net/joomla/index.php/inquests
This short film describes men who are still fishing in the Severn using traditional lave nets. They mention how especially-bad the cold water was before modern waders became available.

The film location is Black Rock, near Portskewett on the Welsh side of the river near the "new" Severn Crossing. I can't help thinking this placename is linked with the unlikely? sounding Black Rock Farm, Bream Road, Lydney.

Here another branch of the Saunders family were living thro' the 1800s, as per this prior post which helpfully adds more CEnsus info to another part of the Saunders family.
