Arthur HAYES 1823 Devon - Cinderford Iron Works (General)
I agree, the gap is odd. Although it's only a gap in baptisms, not births and they may have been a bit remiss in that department as we can't find a baptism at all for Frederick James a few years later on! It's strange that Arthur James doesn't feature in the gaol records as he was there between 12.4.1852 and 24.4.1852, then again between 18.8.1852 and 14.9.1852 according to the London Gazette. However, this man is an enigma all through his life: he's a census enumerator in 1871, his wife is listed as a widow in 1881 and he actually dies, with Frederick James in attendance, in Tredegar in 1890! We have no idea, as yet, why he went there or whether or not the family always knew where he was. So it's all of a piece that he shouldn't feature in the gaol records. I wonder if he might have been held elsewhere. Although the Gazette does state specifically "the County Gaol of Gloucester". All very odd. Do you know where the records for the court are actually held? Those may be our only chance of narrowing down the search.
Regards,
Sian.
