Just thought the members of the Forum would be interested to know that the Daily Mail (UK) is serialising a book, by Winifred Foley (Full Hearts and Empty Bellies).

Winifred was born in 1914 in Brierley, Nr Cinderford - daughter of a Miner. She died last week age 94 - this book is due out on Thursday (republished) Her other books are listed on the 'net'.

The Daily Mail has extracts on its online website, plus photographs.

Saturday's article - has highlights such as : Bloomers tied with string, pigs' bladder for footballs, whole families sharing a bed and a quote 'We learnt to chew slowly to make food last'

Monday's article - is when Winifred reached 14 and this birthday meant, for a daughter that she was old enough to get her feet under someone else's table or, in the case of a son, that he could follow his father down the pit.

and Tomorrow's is entitled : A first kiss that led to heartbreak.
