The line from Monmouth to Ross-on Wye was built by the Ross & Monmouth Railway
under an Act of July 5, 1865 and opened on August 4, 1873.
It was worked by the GWR from the outset, although the local company
maintained its nominal independence until 1922.

However if you travelled by foot or cart to Ross on Wye then :-

The 'Hereford, Ross and Gloucester Railway' built the line due to an Act of Parliament
being passed in 1851. The stretch was opened on 1st June 1855.

then
Gloucester -> Birmingham -> Crewe / Liverpool by rail
