Baynham Farm (General)
Keith,
I can help with some information, but I'm not sure that I have the complete story.
My mother, Marjorie Newman, was born in Baynham Farm in 1909 (that's the location on her birth certificate). Her family, the Newmans, had farmed there since the 1840's, but in earlier censuses, the address was shown as Sutton Farm. However, looking at old and new maps, this seemed to be the same location, just up a track from near Wellington's Farm. The name change seemed to be supported when I visited there a couple of years ago and met the present owners -- it's now called Sutton Baynham farm.
However, prompted by your note, I went back and looked at the 1841 census, and I see that there were indeed two locations -- Sutton Farm, occupied by Elizabeth Wellington and family (presumably connected with Wellington Farm); and Bainham's Farm, occupied by your ancestors.
By 1851, there's no mention of Baynham Farm in the census, and Sutton Farm is occupied by my ancestors, the Newmans, where they stayed until about 1915.
I would like to piece together the story of the one/two locations, but I don't really know how or where to research land records. Maybe the more experienced members of this forum couls offer some tips.
Incidentally, a similar question was placed on this board a short while ago, under the heading Sutton Farm or Wellington Farm.
