William Puckmore m Ann Loveridge (General)

by sianb, England, Tuesday, July 25, 2017, 11:42 (2687 days ago)

Can anyone help with the following please.
William Puckmore yeoman of Pauntley married Ann Loveridge 3 May 1689 in Oxenhall, although the record states that her residence was also Pauntley. What was the connection to Oxenhall, why marry there?
Also, can anyone find a baptismal record for her which would probably be about 1670? I have trawled the internet in all the usual places and can find nothing.

(To confuse the issue, I have also found another Anne Loveridge marrying into the Hooper family in 1690.)

William and Ann Puckmore had children Ann in 1690 and Hannah 1691.
Thank you.

There is a previous thread on this family

Assume you belong to Ancestry (or have a copy of the Will + Inventory of William PUCKMORE of Pauntley dated 1730)

Talks about his children Hannah (HILL) and Ann HAWKINS + grandchildren - so his wife is obviously dead.

Towards the end he talks about John LOVERIDGE the Elder and John LOVERIDGE of younger of Pauntley (as Trustees) and a William LOVERIDGE was a witness - so family connections here.

Thank you for replying MPGriffiths.

Yes, I have all the information on this family, sister, father's gravestone information etc apart from answers to the two questions that I asked.
I have seen the acual record of Wiliam and Ann's marriage in the Parish records for Oxenhall, but have no idea why they would marry there or why it is also recorded in Dymock when the marriage took place in Oxenhall and they both lived in Pauntley.

I wondered if either of them had been married before as he was in his 40's and as I can find no record of her birth, may be she is older than I had anticipated.

I can find no record of her burial either.
Always more questions to answer :-)

As Hannah PACKMORE married at Dymock in 1715

was her Mother: Ann PACKMORE the one buried at Dymock 14.3. 1719/1720

Appears to be farmers marrying to keep land in the families.

I have Anne Lov(e)ridge m (3/5/1689) William Puckmore Yeoman of Pauntley he bpt 17/3/1645 Pauntley and buried 7/10/1729.
I have only two more references to Ann, when her children are baptised in Pauntley - Ann (23/4/1690) and Hannah (17/11/1691).
I would dearly like to find a baptismal reference for the MOTHER nee Ann Lovridge and also her burial record as Ann Puckmore. The Dymock burial on 14/3/1719 is possible, but again, why not Pauntley which is where the family lived?

Thank you for the help which I've already been given. I'm sure you're correct that it's farming families consolodating land.

Perhaps some work was being done on Pauntley Church at the time and they couldn't use it?

They may have been living as man and wife previously, hence them both coming from Pauntley, and they wanted to marry out of the area so no one knew.

I've got exactly the same situation in my tree. In that case, the couple had already had one child so probably didn't want anyone to know they weren't married and so they married in the next county.

Well, I'm tentatively hoping that I've solved the problem. I have discovered an Anne Loveridge baptised in Dymock in 1655 daughter of Richard Loveridge and I've also discovered a burial of an Anne Packmore of Dymock in Pauntley on March 1st 1738. (both records from Ancestry)

I had assumed she predeceased her husband William Puckmore (buried 1629)as she is not mentioned in his will, but have no evidence as yet.

I'm still not 100% certain though. I'm on the look out for wills.

From this site I presume this is the Anne PUCKMORE referred to,

On Ancestry is the will of Anne Puckmore of the Parish of Dymock in the County of Gloucester, Widdow, dated 02/11/1731. In it she mentions daughters Joan HAYWARD and Anne B??? and son, John PUCKMORE. She also mentions a legacy from “Alexander WOOD, my brother”. The will was proved on 15/03/1739 with John PUCKMORE as the sole executor.

The accompanying inventory was taken by Richard and John LOVERIDGE but dated 07/03/1739-40.

Because of this I wonder if this was Anne WOOD. She may have been the wife of Edward PUCKMORE,

Thanks for this Mike. I had seen both the records and was quite excited until I saw the children's names on the will.

The Ann Lov(e)ridge I'm looking for had two children with William Puckmore - Ann 1690 and Hannah 1691 - 1751.
Both of these daughters are mentioned in father William Puckmore's (1645-1729)will. Ann married John Hankins of Dymock and Hannah married Thomas Hill of Dymock

Thank you for your help.

Anne Wood of Newent, born 1706 Newent, died 08/04/1740 Pauntley, married 02/10/1740 in Pauntley John Loveridge the younger, Gentleman of Aylesmore, Pauntley (on the boundaries between Pauntley, Dymock and Newent parishes) and Churchwarden in Pauntley; he was born 1702 Pauntley but baptised in Newent and died 11/02/1764 Pauntley.

Also on Ancestry is the will of Edward PUCKMORE of the Parish of Dymock in the County of Gloucester, dated the fourth year of the reign of King George (1717). He mentions daughters Joane HAYARD, Hestor ROBINS?, Anne CLARK? and son, John PUCKMORE. He also mentions his wife but does not name her. He appoints his wife executrix.

Probate seems to have been granted on 7th April 1722 (it’s in Latin, I guess) to Anna PUCKMORE.

The accompanying inventory was taken on 26th April 1721 by William PUCKMOORE and Robert RIDER. Apprized at £18 12s 6d.

Hi. Sorry for late response; I was on holiday when I saw your post. To respond about the above:

The brother of Ann Loveridge was Giles Loveridge, Yeoman of Oxenhall and Newent; he married Mary Wood 23/02/1698 in Oxenhall and died 1728 in Oxenhall.

The father of Ann L was Giles L Junior, Yeoman of Newent, born 1637 Pauntley, died 1712 Newent.

The grandfather of Ann L was Giles Loveridge Senior, Yeoman of Pauntley and Newent, Churchwarden Pauntley and Overseer of Poor in Pauntley. Born 1614 Pauntley, married Elizabeth and died 1889 Newent.

The gt-grandfather of Ann L was William Loveridge, Husbandsman, born 1580 Dymock and married Anne Wall 25/10/1607 in Pauntley.

All these people are close relations to my direct ancestors. Note that at this time the Loveridges owned several properties in the parishes of Dymock, Pauntley, Newent and Oxenhall; hence it is not surprising that Ann married in Oxenhall, particularly as her brother was living there.

I would be more than interested to see other information that you might have about the Loveridges.

Hi,

I don't have much information about the Loveridge family as I have only recently decided to go sideways in my tree to see if I can break a few walls down.

Anne Lovridge (unknown baptism - possible burial 14 March 1719 Dymock) - not found as yet, starting to wonder if this was a second marriage for her.
Marriage to William Puckmore (1645 -1729) 3 May 1689 Oxenhall.
They had two daughters

Ann (1690 bpt 23 April 1690 Pauntley

Hannah (1691) bpt 17 Nov 1691 Pauntley. She married (9th Nov 1715) Thomas Hill(1688-1756) and their daughter Hannah Hill(1724 -1797) married William Hodges(1713 -1790)on Oct 27 1741 - he is my direct line ancestor via my Mother.

I also have a much earlier Ane Loveridge (abt 1580)on my tree who married a John Wylse and had a daughter Martha Wylse(bpt18/10/1607) who married (1634) a Willyam Hodges(1607 - 1676)
