This entry from GFHS Marriage Index:

22 February 1813 James BRAIN of Littleworth married Ann MORGAN of Littleworth by Banns at HEMPSTED.

There were numerous marriages at Hempstead at this time and included a number of Foresters.

Hi Carol

I can't find a baptism on this site for James Brain b 1872. On FreeBMD there are two possibilities for Gloucestershire: Birth Registrations Sept 1871 & Sept 1875 both at Westbury-on-Severn. Do you know what his parents names were please? I notice on Glos Archives Genealogical Database there are several Brains who were non-conformists (?)

I've just had a grovelling e mail from our original poster, who was obviously having a nervous breakdown! Forget 1872 - we want siblings of 1782 James (I think).

Here we go then:

James BRAIN born East Dean 1782

by Jean Herbert @, Leeds Yorkshire, Sunday, March 02, 2008, 08:58 (6116 days ago) @ LOTTABOTTLE

I was pleased to read the entry posted by LOTTABOTTLE as it has answered a lot of my missing links in the early Brain family. ChrisW's finding of the parents of James Brain was a big help as this has cleared up one mystery. There were actually two James Brains born to Giles and Ann. The first one being James born 1783.

I have not found so far a burial for the other duplicate child, Giles 1772.
ChrisW mentions another child Nancy born to a Giles and Nancy. Could this be a possible second marriage for Giles or is this another person altogether? Regards Jean Herbert

I can't take the credit for finding the parents - take a bow Slowhands!

The birth of Nancy comes within the same timescale as the other children - so I don't think it is a second marriage. Just wondering if Ann was known as Nancy?

Chris

My apologies Slowhands. Should read things properly, thank you for finding the information about Giles. As to the child Nancy and her parents Giles and Nancy, one would hope that it is not a similar event as in my tree in another part of the country. The gentleman in question had two households running at the same time, both "wives" having full knowledge of the other party. Regards Jean Herbert

Hi Jean

A wild card search threw up the following baptism:

There is a marriage for a Nancy Matthews to John Verry at Flaxley on 24/12/1776.

Now you are even more confused aren't you?

Chris

by mbarrett @, Friday, March 14, 2008, 08:25 (6104 days ago) @ ChrisW

Hello,

This is the first time I've posted, so please forgive any mistakes. I'm a direct descendant of Giles Brain and Ann Vaughan and have a lot of information about the Brain families, starting with Giles Brain (Brayne), christened 28 Mar 1686 in Littledean. Most of the following information came to me 20 years ago from a gentlemen named W.A. (Tony) Brain, Dorking, Surrey. He had been researching numerous Brain families for years.

It's too much to be posted here, but I would be happy to email it to anyone interested.

I am also a Brain from the Forest and am trying to take the family back past Giles and Ann there were and are so many Brains in the Forest and several Giles, James and Christopher's I am truly bewildered. We have a Brain family get together in May and it would mean so much if I could progress.
My cousin is coming over from the States in a couple of weeks and we are planning some leg work
I would be obliged if you could help in any way

Having put this together, I decided to find the first marriage of Leah Rich to Emanuel Gardener which took place in Cinderford in 1852. I cannot however find her marriage to Cornelius Brain, their first child Sarah Ann Brain was born in 1859. A challenge for someone !!
