She was born abt 1841 FOD. Her father was James Harris born abt 1815 Gloucestershire.
Mary Ann's mother was Susannah born abt 1822 FOD (sorry, no maiden name).

Susannah Harris born 1844

Hi Juliette and welcome to this fantastic website, we're lucky to have such a great resource !

This sites has a huge database of fully searchable Parish Records which you can access free of charge 24/7. There are more free websites if you need them but none as good as this one, and none have the Forum etc etc. They can give additional info or just verify what you find, none are 100% perfect or complete.
On this site just click on blue "Parish Records" button at top of page.

From this you can find the following;

Baptism (aka Birth) Record for Susannah Harris born abt (ie about)1844 gives:

Record_ID: 63334
Entry_Number: 462

Is this your Susannah ?. I guess yes as its a fairly unusual name on the database, there being "only" 30 sets of PRs (Parish Records) listed under that name, thats across Baptisms, Marriages and Burials.

So also from this site aka FoD PRs:

You can tell this is correct PR by checking Father's name, Parish Chapel etc. Such info helps ensure we have the right Susannah, eg in this instance a Mary Susannah Harris also from Westbury on Severn was married just the previous year, but cannot be confused as different parents names etc.
Also names of witnesses, usually family members or close friends, are often given, helping with further branches of the tree.
The Marriage Record is often the most helpfull of the three BMD records because of this.

When searching her Burial Record don't forget(its easy) her surname has changed, now its Hayward. Luckily again there are only 19 PRs for this name on the site (for "common" people like my family of Jones there are often pages and pages to read).

HOWEVER I cannot find her at this visit; even by just searching all the S Haywards/Heywords/etc (by ticking Soundex box) for all the Parishes, giving 141 possible Burial Records to check, I cannot see "your"s...yet!
Maybe she remarried and changed surname, or maybe she's moved away so not on the database, etc.

Anyway hope this helps for a starter, I'm sure you can find some more information now.

Susannah Harris born 1844

Oh yes Juliette,
just remembered the Golden Rule (which sadly I often forget).
First search the Forum for similar names as the Tree may have already been researched; I've just realised the above findings have today been done by the everhelpfull Slowhands. Nice to see my guess of a second marriage was correct, even fools like me can learn (eventually).
Ah well, hopefully my notes will help you to understand how to navigate the database, any more queries of course please ask, but preferably after you've searched for the answer yourself first - see FAQs at top of page. Its far more rewarding, fun and downright educational to do the research yourself, honest !

by juliette, Wednesday, July 13, 2011, 19:49 (4891 days ago) @ Jefff

Thanks jegff.Yiou have obviously put in some work for me. That is very kind!
I have been on this all day ( dislocated shoulder so not much else to do> I have pprogressed the tree a bit, I have susannah harris;' parents ( william harris m susannah wilkins in 1843) but i can't be sure about his parents : john and elizabeth I think... and hers thomas and sarah wilkins but I cannot find ther marriages or possible dobs to corroborate this.
On the other side I have trace Elizabeths' paretage right back ( i think0 to eward Hyett ( b 1706)!! but cant get any further than her husban John's parents thomas and Ann hayward as yet again i cannot corroborate facts by either date of marriage or possbible dobs.
Any suggestions Hugely gratefully received.

Anyway thanks for your help and interest.

Well done ! Great for a beginner, particularly carrying a wound !
I must say I thought Hyett was an unusual if not rare name, new to me and I've worked all round the uk, yet in fact I see 261 Hyett PRs in Westbury On S alone !, and thats not allowing for probably a fair few misspellings on top. Thats what I like about this subject, you learn so much about social life of the past, such as how particular surnames are often specific to an area.
This site's great for that, as you can see Hyett is very much a Severnside name !
http://gbnames.publicprofiler.org/Map.aspx?name=HYETT&year=1881&altyear=1998&am...

Glad to also see t'other threads helping you out too re Robert Hyett etc. Never feel afraid to email members direct if they appear to be researching "your" lines, they may be distant relatives of yours, and will probably help you with more info if you get stuck, for example the usefull Census Returns which this site doesn't hold. (Re the email pls check your inbox.)

so Wm Harris born abt 1823 say, father Wm perhaps born 1805,same area probably. Thats the trouble when they just said "full age" ie "adult", anything from 20 to 60!. Dont forget too the given ages on marriage & burial records are often guestimates in ye olde days, perhaps with some years "lost" for personal reasons...
Also note only bride's witnesses are recorded, unusual, so no clues re the grooms errant parents.

My advice when searching is to not apply too many filters, yes this can help but it might cause you to miss things. Also by reading apparently unrelated PRs you may accidentally find other family members for future use. In this way I discovered six brothers & sisters we never knew my grandmother had !. I suggest you methodically work thro each & every possible PR for a given name, including spelling variations, within a likely time period, in this case say William Harris Baptisms, probably W-O-Severn, from 1780-1825?. In fact there are only 15 in total on the database, so easy to do all.

Sure enuff you get a likely:

I see your problem now re Father's & Mother's full names !.
That said its very common for the child to take the father's name so no real secrets here, this lad's father is quite probably a William Harris too, although not certain of course.
I love these quaint old phrases, I have some "b-b" in my line too!

I see theres also these William Harris' in W-O-S. Got to be worth tracing their parentage, most certainly close relations.

(Wow, I've never found a soldier before, I think far more interesting than my line of colliers)
Note how certain first names are very common(sorry, popular) such as fashionable "Royal" names like Elizabeth, William (my dad, his dad, his dad, my son, etc etc); often passed down from parent to children; not helpful to us though !

Or even perhaps:

Record_ID: 82581

In such a situation look for other Harris's and try and build family groups, perhaps finding same witness's names will help, perhaps suggesting a hierarchy within a family or local group. T'other PRs found may give additional relevant clues such as parents names etc. Also try to find the Burial Record for each parent, that may help gauge the likely age of their children, again helping you distinguish the different families.
I suspect here James Harris & John Harris are sons of another William Harris too.

Even if not "ours" still worth recording this line, it maybe relevant, and it reduces the "possibles" that we're trying to find "our" James from.

Which suggests James 1809 died an infant ?.
However no PR, unless MAYBE this one's date should be 1809, not 1804... could easily have been transcribed wrong ?, like the Vicar's surname for example.

There are NO other James Harris Baptisms just before 1804, so seems reasonable..

Guess they may have had a daughter, guess name Mary, search PRs:

As you can see, its far more fun than Suduki etc !

This could be her, perhaps explaining why I couldn't find her Marriage Record ?
There are several other Mary Harris Burial Records but the ages don't tie up at all:

Record_ID: 46086
Entry_Number: 992

And now just plough thro all the other Westbury Harris's as I suggested earlier, and find the families. Fortunately now you're entering the era of Census returns data, a quicker way of discovering a family household, but not as much fun or info.

'I've never found a Soldier before) - re: John HARRIS, Soldier, 27 August 1816.

Battle of Waterloo took place Sunday 15 June 1815

On Ancestry there is 'UK Waterloo Medal Roll 1815' - a number of John HARRIS, rank etc - but not residence/place of birth.

can recognise a FOD name that pops up from time to time.

George GWILLIAM - 1st Battalion 79th Regiment of foot

and John GUILLEAM - Drummer, 28th Regiment of foot (later a Gloucestershire Regiment)

EXCELLENT website, thanks MPG !
(note I'm not a violent warmonger, just like big loud guns and men in uniforms...)

I think the 79th Foot were the illustrious Cameron Highlanders, a broad Forest dialect amongst them could be interesting (and no I don't like men in skirts !).
