MARKEY, Benjamin, born in Taynton in 1818 (General)

by maggiec, Sunday, March 16, 2008, 05:16 (6105 days ago)

Benjamin Markey was the first child of Joseph and Elizabeth Markey and was baptised in Taynton on 18 June 1818. His brother Charles was baptised in Taynton on 23 April 1820. My problem is that both brothers seem to have had a daughter named Mary Ann born about 1848 and I'm finding it very difficult to find which Mary Ann my ggrandfather John Green married.

One of the problems is that the marriage between Mary Ann Markey and John Green seems to have taken place in North America (my grandmother's eldest sister Emily was born in Pennsylvania, North America according to the 1881 census of Wales). There is no trace I can find in the UK marriage records of a marriage between a John Green and Mary Ann Markey. The 1881 Wales census states that Mary Ann was born in Blaina, Mon.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

MARKEY, Benjamin, born in Taynton in 1818

by John Rudge, Sunday, March 16, 2008, 05:40 (6105 days ago) @ maggiec

There are many Markley ( with an L ) families in Pennsylvania from the late 1700s up to present. During the 1800s to 1920 the census takers were known to spell the name Markly, Marklee, Markley and Markey you could try one of those spellings. Most in the Pennsylvania are were German decendents ( Penn Dutch ),might be easy to sort out English born.

Dear John Rudge

Thank you very nuch for replying to my request for help.

I think that John Green and Mary Ann Markey must have married in N. America about 1870 because their eldest daughter Emily was born there in 1872 but they were back in S.Wales by the time their second child was born in 1874. I suppose they could have had previous children who died in America.

Mary Ann doesn't show up on the 1861 or 1871 census of England or Wales. John Green was living in Wales in 1861 but not in 1871.

I plan to look up again the Immigration records available on Ancestry.co.uk but i haven't yet found how to look up the censuses for the USA. A subscription to Ancestry.com seems expensive until I have more things to look up! I'll certainly remember your suggested possible variations on the name when I do so.

Many thanks again for your interest

Ellis Island and Castle Garden records

by maggiec, Wednesday, March 19, 2008, 08:05 (6102 days ago) @ slowhands

Iohn Green and Mary Ann Markey were, I think, married somewhere in North America. probably Pennsylvania, sometime towards the end of the 1860s. They may have got to know each other because they both had a connection with the Forest of Dean. I suppose that if you were setting off to the States you would try to go to a place where people you knew or whom your friends knew were already living.

Emily Green was born in 1872 in Pennsylvania but she returned to S.Wales with her parents sometime before 1874 when her sister Margaret Ann was born. Emily's daughter died only a few years ago but she didn't remember her mother talking about America,( she was ,after all, only a small child when she returned.) The family were the one living in Cefn, Trelewis, Gelligaer, in the 1881 census.

I think I must have misled you somehow because my Emily Green never returned to the USA.

Thanks again for all the information you've given me.

Mary Ann MARKEY 1849 d/o Benjamin & Gwenellian

by maggiec, Monday, March 17, 2008, 10:26 (6104 days ago) @ slowhands

Dear slowhands

Thank you very much for going to so much trouble on my behalf. You've given me a lot of new information.

i've been in touch with someone who left a message on Ancestry.co register of interests and who is related to the Gwenllian Thomas who married Benjamin Markey. She tells that their daughter Mary Ann shows up on the 1851 Wales census as Mary Ann McKay living with her maternal grandparents Jenkin Thomas and his wife Mary in Aberdare. That still leaves no trace of her in 1861 or 1871.

This seems to have taken Mary Ann away from the Forest of Dean. I'm fairly sure that it is Benjamin's Mary Ann not Charles's who is my ggrandmother because four of Benjamin's children, Emily, Jennet, Rosetta and Benjamin have the same fairly unusual Christian names as in my grandmother's family.

Once again, thank you for your help.

Margaret C

Which probably explains the reference to Blaina in a later census !

John GREEN Aston Ingham / May Hill 1823

by maggiec, Monday, March 17, 2008, 10:46 (6104 days ago) @ slowhands

Once again thank you for putting together all this information for me.

I find it very difficult to make myself remember whom i'm talking about with so many John Greens in this family!

I've used the Family Search site and have found some more possible John Greens, though I know this site needs careful checking.I really must go to Gloucester Record Office and/or Hereford Record Office some day soon.

You might be interested to know that John and Mary Ann's son John Benjamin kept a pub in Trelewis, Glam but had to give this up at the time of the Depression of the 1920s. He went down the pit to earn some money and was very badly injured within a few days of starting there. He had no children. So no more John Greens.

Thanks again
