William Morse - Ruspidge (General)

by ChrisW @, Tuesday, March 18, 2008, 11:02 (6100 days ago)

Listed in the 1894 Kelly's Directory Of Cinderford (under Ruspidge) is a William Morse "shopkeeper & beer retailer".

Could someone please do a census check for me to see if he is one of mine?

Many Thanks
Chris

New Inn, 170 Ruspidge Road, GL14 3AR

The New Inn was purpose built in 1855

The New Inn is almost directly opposite the Rising Sun Inn on the eastern side of Ruspidge Road. It was once a rare outlet for Alton Court Brewery Ales of Ross on Wye. I wonder if Edwardian beer drinkers realised just how good Ruspidge was for interesting ales? The New Inn closed at 11p.m. The Rising Sun and other pubs in the area closed at 10 p.m. There must have been one mass exodus in an easterly direction when the Rising Sun called last orders! The New Inn is comprised of two distinct buildings. At right angles to the road is a traditional sandstone building with two bay windows and a central door. Fronting the road is a rendered building with original window frames. The New Inn is still trading.

William MORSE 1830 Awre - The New INN, Ruspidge pt2

by ChrisW @, Friday, March 21, 2008, 02:43 (6098 days ago) @ slowhands

Lots of interesting info there Slowhands, thankyou. Looks like William was the son of Richard Morse and Martha Tippins, married 13/11/1826 at Awre.

William was from Blakeney, like the rest of my clan, but at the moment I can't see where he fits in. Other Morse's were also publicans in the area. Because I still haven't been able to find a baptism for George Morse, c1773 Blakeney Hill, I don't know who his brothers were. I suspect this is where this line leads from?

Many Thanks
Chris

Hello Slowhands.

As the current owner of The New Inn Ruspidge (now 5 years) I wondered if you would be interested in seeing the deeds of the property?

William Morse first appears in the records on 30.07.1883 on a document titled 'Conveyance' for George Hewlett and Mortgagees (1).

Then again on a document entitled 'Mortgage' dated 14.08.1883.

William Morse appears later on a further 'Conveyance' document dated 30.04.1890 this time it appears to be a sale to The Alton Court Brewery.

I can update the records you print regarding the other licensees right up to date if you wish.

Hope this is of interest to you - I am trying to piece the history of The New Inn together in particular its origins.

Please make contact if you wish to know more
