Phoebe Marshall/ Barnes- could she be a Ward!? (General)

Hi

For those of you who remember my various threads re this lady who had a number of illegitimate children as Marshall, but they all changed their names to Ward for some unexplained reason, and for anyone who has the strength or courage to look in again, I have found someting else. I fear I am not just losing the plot, but also the will to go on!lol!!!

associated threads!!

Phoebe b 1791, Westbury states her father is John Marshall a Mason (no baptism for her, except a dodgy on at Westbury on Trym, to John Marshall and Hannah, that doesn't state father occupation). Phoebe had son Benjamin Barnett Marshall at Hope Mansell in 1809 and it looks like her parents may have brought him up as their own.

There is a baptism on this site for a George Ward at Hope Mansell in 1789 to Hannah Ward, reputed father John Marshall!!
Could this George be Phoebe's brother then?
Other children on same batch no on igi to John Marshall and Hannah are-

. JEMIMA MARSHALL - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Female Christening: 19 OCT 1794 Hope Mansell, Hereford, England

2. CHARLES MARSHALL - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Male Christening: 09 JAN 1803 Hope Mansell, Hereford, England

3. JOHN MARSHALL - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Male Christening: 09 MAR 1800 Hope Mansell, Hereford, England

4. JOANNA MARSHALL - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Female Christening: 04 JUN 1797 Hope Mansell, Hereford, England

5. JANE MARSHALL - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Female Christening: 26 JUL 1812 Hope Mansell, Hereford, England

6. DINAH MARSHALL - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Female Christening: 10 JUL 1808 Hope Mansell, Hereford, England

7. MARY ANN MARSHALL - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Female Christening: 12 MAY 1805 Hope Mansell, Hereford, England

8. GEORGE WARD - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Male Christening: 08 NOV 1789 Hope Mansell, Hereford, England

Given the dob's could it be then that Hannah had George to John albeit illigitemately, they moved to Westbury on Trym for some time and had Phoebe and then back to Hereford and had the other children?

just realised she probably is a Marshall, but it would explain why children called theselves Ward, they took their grandmother's name?

Please put me out of my misery and say yes!!!lol!

Phoebe Marshall/ Barnes- could she be a Ward!?

Hi, I have been chasing this elusive lady for some 30 years, she is my GG grand mother! She lived with a widower John Burns, their 5 children were named Ward? all baptised English Bicknor with John Burns signing his name as the father. My GG Grand father Charles was one of these children, his son Elam is my Grand Father, his son Frederick is my father. Thirty years ago my father said we should not be named Ward it should be Burns! The whole family worked as wood cutters in the Forest of Dean and to make sure they covered their options they signed Burns/Ward. I still have not found out why Ward? and as you say the story deepens, who was Phoebe? IGI index 3-12-1791 W-on-Trym a Phoebe was christened M & Father John and Hannah Marshall. Also a Phoebe Marshall married a John Barnes on 14-11-1839 at Flaxley Glos. It was said in the family that John and Phoebe were married in their own home by a local vicar together with many others in the area. On the 1861 cencus a Phoebe Barnes is residing with Benjamin Marshall family at Ruardean Woodside, East Dean Glos., as a widow.

Tee Hee Hee Slowhands!! You are a glutten for punishment!

Have to admit that I have wandered down this path again lately! It just bugs me that we found baptisms for all Phoebe Marshall's children in name of Marshall or Ward or both, and yet I still have n't found one for my George Marshall/Ward,/Byrne/Bourne etc b c 1818. Surely if she had all the others baptised she would have had him baptised too?

It must be a George thing !

I have a missing Baptism for a George , his sister and two brothers either side of him all accounted for , but not George ;-)

I'm not too worried about him, his eldest sibling took some detective work, and conclusion was " born out of wedlocck" , but everything fudged or delayed until after the wedding so that it looked OK on paper.

I think you're right then, must be a George thing!

Trouble is, all Phoebe's were born out of wedlock!! I wonder if she just didn't bother as he was the first of many born 9/10 yrs after first son Benjamin.
