Hi Chris,
You're right, of course: 20 years is a tidy while and he may well have lived a "blameless" life after that. Mind you, by 1881 he'd gone from the Forest, leaving his wife to be a "widow" for at least 9 years before he actually died! You're probably also right that we'll never know what really happened.
