Tallerin Harris (General)

by anthonyworgan @, Monday, April 14, 2008, 06:25 (6074 days ago)

Has anyone found any reference to a Tallerin Harris post 1825?
He was born circa 1796, married 3rd July 1824 at Lydney Jane Wintle.
A daughter Jane was baptised 6th January 1825 Parkend.
Jane Wintle already had a natural daughter Sarah bap 20 Feb 1820 Lydney.
Searched in vain over many years for this family - they do not appear on the 1841 or later censuses. No marriages found for the daughters or burials for Tallerin or Jane (likewise daughters). Did they vanish or emigrate?

Many thanks. Yes, I believe that his name is really 'Taliesin' - a former renowned barer of this name was the 10th century Welsh poet, who wrote one of the four ancient books of Wales - 'The Book of Taliesin'. Spelling varies - Tallareen/Tallerin (in the marriage registers). Searching for his whereabouts/burial after 1825.

Many thanks again.
Checked the 1851 census - says Tolerain Harris age 46 unm
1861 census - says Solesen Harris age 60 unm
both born Forest of Dean - this is correct, age wrong & he is probably a widower by now as no mention of wife Jane.
Found a Tolareen Harris died 1869 reg Sept Pontypridd & aged 73. This is very likely him as he was bapt 1796 at Newland.
Greatly appreciated all the help folks for pointing me in the right direction.

Free BMD gives 8 possibles for the death of Mary Harri[e]s between 1851 and 1861.

There are two death indexes for Elizabeth Night/Knight who was living next door to Tallerin in 1841 and lodging with him in 1851. They are both 1853 Jan-Feb-Mar Pontypool Volume 11a, one on page 104 and the other on page 117.

Hi Paul,

Many thanks once again.
Do you have the reference number for the 1841 census concerning Tallerin & Elizabeth Night/Knight. I tried yesterday to find any reference to him on the 1841 census while at my local library without success - using all manner of spelling combinations?

Many thanks once again.
Original census sheet on screen looks more like Talaman (1841) but like you say Ancestry has listed his name as Salman. The 1861 census CD ROM from the Glamorgan FHS has his name listed as John!!! - even without a magnifying glass it looks like S/talaran - but extremely difficult to read all the same. His death cert as Tolareen (1869) should be interesting to see.

Puzzle solved!
Tallerin Harris - death cert has his name as 'Tolareen' died 27 August 1869 in the Union Workhouse, Pontypridd aged 73.
His wife Jane (nee Wintle) does not appear on the 1841 census - so I presume she died circa 1827-1841, still searching for her death.
Her natural daughter Sarah (Wintle) bap 1820 Lydney & her daughter Jane bap 1825 Lydney from this marriage to Tallerin (1824 Lydney) are still to be accounted for. However, I have found their son James (born circa 1826/7 in the Forest - bap not found yet) aged 35 on the 1861 census - Ystradyfodwg (Pontypridd district) RG 9 Piece 4063 Fol 56 Page 1. Living as a widower with 3 sons, William, John & James. His wife Mary seems to have died between 1851-1861.
After many years of searching it is great to finally tidy up Tallerin - many thanks for the fantastic help through this site. The icing on the cake would be to find the baptism of James & the death/burial of Jane.
