Blewett/Blewitt/Buett (General)
by Tony Blewitt, Tuesday, April 22, 2008, 04:08 (6066 days ago)
Hi we are trying to trace our roots in the Forest of Dean (Cinderford) we have a few names can anyone help - Frank (not Francis) born 2 June 1882, Fred born 1880 to William Blewitt and Eliza/Elizabeth nee Probert. They had a sister called Fanny. I have looked in the Parish Records etc and nothing fits with these dates. It is not helped by the fact that there seems to be so many spellings of the surname and we have tried soundex. Any clues/help would be appreciated as we are in New Zealand.

Thank you - sorry its taken so long to get back to you - we are 12 hours ahead in time so as you sleep we work!! The information is great - I will have to sift through it all - unfortunately from a quick glance some of it does not seem to fit - however everything will be looked at under the "microscope" it would have helped if Fred and Frank had talked about their "roots" which they did not....we do know that Fred played Rugby for either Swansea or Cardiff and was "capped". Also that he worked in the mines and left for New Zealand in 1910 from London bound for Lyttleton - Frank we have no idea he was in the mines too and came out here a couple of years later but he spelt his name Blewett where as mine (Freds son) is spelt Blewitt (same family) there was something about patent medicieces and they changed the spelling so that the Patent would not be attributed to another William that lived in Cinderford - which might add to the mix of things..........oh to be simple then it would not be so much fun.....

AH AH - yes we are getting somewhere the other cousin Franks son in New Zealand here says that some of the family went to America and Canada about the same time as Fred and Frank came here 1910 onwards.........why what happened in Cinderford etc in this time to make them all migrate...anyone got any ideas? I am so grateful to you all for helping us so far.

Thanks for all the information so far New York connection has not cropped up YET but is in the "possibles" file - I have found Williams Bapitism etc and it says that his father was William (not again!!) and his Mother was Constance.
Any information about these two in the early 1800's would be appreciated cant find anything on BMD or in Parish Records except that William was baptised.

Okay now here is a real conunudrum - William (b1851) is listed on several Birth and Marriage Certs as an Ointment Manufacturer - he then reverts to being a Collier but son Harry takes up the Ointment business. Now this fits in with "family history" that there was a Patent Ointment Manufacturer of animal remedies. Anyone got any clues about where I can find out anything about this majic potion!! Patents office does not have any records etc.

I have a "Miner and Lodging house keeper" in my direct tree, so the prospect of someone "brewing" horse liniment in his out house and selling it does not shock me !!!
