Travellers Rest Inn, Stowe, Newland, Gloucs (General)

by Bryan, Tuesday, April 29, 2008, 00:12 (6052 days ago)

I am attempting to trace part of my family named Knight who once lived and ran the Travellers Rest Inn at Stowe, however I cannot seem to find them in the 1901 census or anywhere in the Forest of Dean where they have lived for over 50 years.the family are:
Charles Knight born 1840 Monmouth
Mary Knight born 1839 Clearwell
Giles Morgan Knight, born 1864 Clearwell
George Knight, born 1866 Clearwell
Harry Knight ,born 1869 Clearwell
Emily Knight born 1878 Clearwell
Ellen Knight born 1882 Clearwell
Charles Knight born 1884 Clearwell

In the 1891 census most of the above are living in the Travellers Rest but after this time the whole family just disappeared without trace. I have been unable to find as yet any marriages or deaths for the above.

Can any one please help with who is living at the Travellers Rest in the 1901 Cenus or any information concerning this family.

Many thanks for your swift reply, can I take it that between 1891 and 1903 the travellers Rest was still run by Charles Knight or is that information and/or records unavailable.

Many thanks once again for your help.

Charles KNIGHT Monmouth in 1901

by Bryan, Tuesday, April 29, 2008, 06:56 (6052 days ago) @ slowhands

I looked at this Charles Knight, but his date of birth given through all the census has been consistant as 1840. The other reason I don't believe this is my Charles Knight is because where are the rest of his family....As I have failed to find any marriages or deaths for any of them, I am keeping an open mind about the above Charles Knight born 1841 but I am not convinced this is him.

Thanks once again

Charles KNIGHT Monmouth in 1901

by Bryan, Wednesday, April 30, 2008, 06:13 (6051 days ago) @ Bryan

Having read one of the postings on the death of Mary Knight in 1892 at Stowe aged 51 years old this could now well be my Charles Knight born 1840. It's funny how in research one piece of information that doesn't fit in with what you believe is correct is so easily discarded and the next instance it's the very pice of the jigsaw that you have been looking for.
Strange sometimes.

Giles Knight and Fany Robinson are part of the same family but a different branch as was Giles Knight and Agnes Lowe.

Giles and Fanny remained in the Forset of Dean but Giles and Agnes moved to the Risca area of Monmothshire and eventually settled in Newport

Both of these lines are complete, but thanks for all your work on my behalf.

by Bryan, Wednesday, April 30, 2008, 06:00 (6051 days ago) @ Bryan

I just wish to thank everyone for contributing to my Travellers Rest enquiry,
what a wealth of information and all within a day or so of it being posted.
It will take me a little while to digest and process all of this information, but before I get on with that.

Thank you all once again, it's been a tremendous response to my original enquiry, I never expected anything like this.....

Regards to all

Bryan
