DAVIS, Charles born abt 1795 (General)

by JennyRaw, Thursday, May 01, 2008, 22:04 (6056 days ago)

DAVIS, Charles George in Hartpury, or Newent. Married Sarah Jane Carter. I would like a wedding date for the couple. Also death places and date if possible.

Children of the marriage are:-
Ellen DAVIS baptised 1829 in Hartpury
Charles DAVIS baptised 1832 in Hartpury died 1835 in Hartpury
Thomas DAVIS baptised 1834 in Hartpury
Alfred DAVIS baptised 1836 in Hartpury
Mary Ann DAVIS baptised 1839 in Maisemore
Charles George DAVIS baptised 1842 in Maisemore
Sarah DAVIS baptised 1849 in Maisemore.

Charles George (1842) eventually migrated to Australia and settled in Newcastle NSW where he became a successful builder. We are trying to organise a family reunion of his descendants and would like as much ancestral information as possible.

This web-site has been invaluable for me in confirming information I had, and also in providing new information.

Thank you to all of the transcribers

DAVIS, Charles born abt 1795

by shepway @, Thursday, May 01, 2008, 23:33 (6056 days ago) @ JennyRaw

Are you certain that Charles DAVIS married Sarah Jane CARTER?

This marriage from GFHS Marriage Index and IGI:
28 January 1823 Charles DAVIS married Sarah WILKINS by Banns at Hartpury.

Census returns tells us that Sarah is from Frocester near Stroud.
This baptism entry from IGI:
25 February 1803 Sarh WILKINS baptised at Frocester. Parents: Nathaniel WILKINS and Mary.

DAVIS, Charles born abt 1795

by JennyRaw, Friday, May 02, 2008, 21:34 (6055 days ago) @ shepway

Hi
I am pretty sure that Charles Davis married Sarah Jane Carter, as the birth certificate of Charles George Davis (born 1842) has his mother's name as Sarah Davis, formerly Carter.

Could there be another Charles Davis, or could this be a second marriage for Charles Davis (1795)

thanks for all of your information.

Will have to set aside some time tomorrow to digest it all

thanks for all of that info - but before I begin to get too excited, I will try and get another birth certificate and see if I can confirm the mother's surname. Where did you get all of that stuff from??

Wilkins in Frocester

by JennyRaw, Friday, July 03, 2009, 10:31 (5629 days ago) @ ChrisW

This is a very belated reply to some assistance. Thank you in anticipation. I have just begun to follow up records for Charles Davis (1842). His birth certificate says his mother's maiden name was Carter but his sister's birth certificate says his mother's maiden name was Wilkins. Both christian names were Sarah. Is it possible that the 'Carter' birth certificate could be wrong? Sarah Davis, wife of Charles Davis bricklayer didn't die until 1873, so it seems unlikely that there was a death and remarriage.
